The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Prof. Dr. Laurent Gizon of #mpsgoettingen and @unigoettingen an ERC Advanced Grant worth 2.5 million euros.
The project INSIDE aims to measure the Sun's magnetic field deep below the visible surface for the first time using solar inertial modes.

I only learned today that Wasaburo Unno died two months ago (Nov 7, 2023). Apparently he's best known for a formula (the Unno—Rachkovsky formula) for deriving magnetic field strengths from polarimetry, but I expect everyone in #helioseismology or #asteroseismology will know him for his famous textbooks on non-radial stellar pulsations.

#Introduction
Hi all, I'm new here 😊 I spend most of my professional time solving this equation:
\[\partial_t \mathbf{u}+2\mathbf{\hat z}\times\mathbf{u}=-\nabla p+E\nabla^2\mathbf{u}, \]
i.e. the Navier-Stokes equation for a rotating fluid. I solve it numerically and sometimes using #fluiddynamics lab experiments. If I'm lucky I get to apply that to problems in #asteroseismology, or #helioseismology, or in #planetaryscience.
