Anyone interested in helping me out by editing a video for me? I have to make a video about #heliboard background gathering, but that isn't part of the nlnet grant, so I can't be paid for it and it will bring me closer to the wire on getting the agreed upon work done.

It's kind of important that there are detailed instructions on how to use the privacy tools for controlling what background gathering actually collects. Don't want to roll it out unless we have that available for contributors.

The only thing keeping me on FUTO is the fact that it fixes the annoyance of #AOSP Android assuming that hyphenated-words are new words and trying to spell-correct them. If Heliboard ever fixes that bug, I'll be on it forever. It's so close to perfect now, it's ridiculous.

I was just lamenting the lack of really good #FOSS keyboards on #Android a couple years ago, and now it's totally different.

Felicíssimo porque achei de novo como configurar digitação multilingue no #HeliBoard

Well, that's surprising. I was typing something, and decided I wanted to replace a sentence with _something_ different, but in brackets. So, I *highlighted* the text to be removed, and started typing, «expecting» the highlighted sentence to be (deleted) by my ‹1st› key press.

Instead, it "placed" opening and closing brackets. „Worked“ with a couple markdown ‘options’ like bold and italic as well.

I thought it might be #Fedilab behind this, but it seems to be #Heliboard

Gboard definitely has a better spelling correction engine.

But #Heliboard is 99% as good*, and totally #FOSS.

*Especially if you install the proprietary glide typing extension, which of course, they're working on a FOSS replacement of, but it will take a while

#Heliboard gesture data project's first batch has been run through the arcane scripts I wrote.

I only had to discard <1% of the gestures; those were duplicates. No obviously fake data!

269,845 gestures, 500+ contributors.

Only ~60% of the gestures are some form of English.

The other most common languages are:
German
Polish
French
Russian
Arabic
Swedish
Italian

There are other languages, with fewer than 1000 gestures, but I don't know their codes by heart... I will map those later!

@tay it took me a long time to move away from gboard because I could never find another keyboard that did swipe typing as good, but I've been using #heliboard for quite a while now and find it to be very good. Might be worth a look if you haven't tried it yet. Open source and privacy focused.

For those looking for a good #FOSS #Android keyboard app, #Heliboard is just about PERFECT now.

Das letzte Stück #Microsoft wurde heute von meinen Android-Geräten verbannt: #Swiftkey.

Nachdem Microsoft ab Mai 2026 zwingend einen MS-Account voraussetzen soll und plant, die gesammelten Daten zu OneDrive hochzuladen, musste die einst so geliebte Tastatur weg. Als Grund für den Upload in die Cloud heißt es übrigens, dass die Daten dort "sicherer" wären.

Mein Ersatz ist #HeliBoard (z.B. auf F-Droid): Open Source, 100% offline, Wischeingabe nachrüstbar, konfigurierbar.

For anyone that is submitting data to #heliboard. We found a bug in creating the zip files. It starts to hang for quite a long time, and can sometimes crash, if you try to submit several thousand gestures. We are working on it.

My guess is we are compressing too aggressively, and Java's zip implementation is RAM heavy.

In the meantime, we suggest you keep your submissions to fewer than 3,000 words.

Your mileage may vary based on the speed of your phone and the amount of RAM it has.

The best Android keyboard #heliboard still uses non-FOSS gesture library.
But this should be changed. So let's collect the data and help together.

Great to hear the developers of the Android keyboard "Heliboard" are working on a fully open gesture typing library. (Glide, Swipe, whatever our keyboard might call it).

Heliboard, like some others, DOES support it, if you download and insert the closed GBoard (Google) library for it.

Heliboard now starts to build an open one that other keyboards will also benefit from.

Right now it only has "active" data collection: You say "I wanna train that thing and submit data", and it'll tell you which words to "swipe".

Later it'll also offer you to just share the data you create during natural use. (All of it will not have personal info and be strictly opt-in!)

So, yeah, awesome to build open stuff for everyone, I'll gladly contribute to that!

O HeliBoard 3.7 acabou de chegar ao F-Droid, com uma nova biblioteca para digitação por gestos (swype). Abrindo o aplicativo do teclado, aparece a opção de treinar essa nova biblioteca, e foi o que fiz. Enviei umas trezentas palavras, entre português e inglês, mão direita e esquerda, polegar e indicador, teclado cheio ou modo de uma só mão.

Ainsi en participant activement, on peut contribuer à la futur librairie de saisie gestuelle visant à remplacer l'actuelle à source fermer de google.

Inutile de préciser que c'est un super moyen de contribuer au libre et d'aider à construire les alternatives de demain :blobPikaUvU:

1️⃣ am Smartphone #whisper (https://f-droid.org/packages/org.woheller69.whisper/). Funktioniert gut, aber brauchst zum umschalten die richtige Tastatur. Bei mir ist das #HeliBoard (https://f-droid.org/packages/helium314.keyboard/). Funktionieren beide offline.
(#Futo, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.futo.voiceinput, ist evtl. schneller und schöner, aber das willst Du vermutlich nicht 😉. Würde aber auch offline funktionieren.)
2️⃣ unter Linux speech note, https://github.com/mkiol/dsnote). Empfinde ich aber als nicht so geschmeidig wie am Smartphone.

I've been running HeliBoard on my phone for a couple of months now. I still have the clumsy-thumbs problem, but it's no worse than it is with GBoard, and unlike Fossify Keyboard, Heliboard does have auto-correct and auto-suggest, which mitigates the problem.

It supports a ton of languages, but is notably missing Japanese and Chinese. (It does support Korean, though, presumably since it's a syllabary.) And of course it's local-only, making it much better from a privacy standpoint!

Also: it can support gestures, but you currently have to side-load a closed-source library to do it. Not ideal, but it does make it more of a drop-in replacement.
