  1. A quotation from Christopher Marlowe

FAUSTUS: Was this the face that launch’d a thousand ships,
And burnt the topless towers of Ilium —
Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss. —
          [They kiss]
Her lips suck forth my soul: see, where it flies! —
Come, Helen, come, give me my soul again.
          [They kiss again]
Here will I dwell, for heaven is in these lips,
And all is dross that is not Helena.

Christopher "Kit" Marlowe (1564-1593) English dramatist and poet
The Tragicall History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, Act 5, sc. 1 (sc. 13), l. 1358ff (1594; 1604 “A” text)

  5. Helen of Troy being played by Lupita Nyong'o. As a Greek myself, it does bother me & almost every other Greek I know, as it's simply not historically accurate. Lupita is very beautiful, but she's not Homer's girl.

People from ANY other kingdom or race in ancient Greece were ending up becoming slaves. I believe that it's beneficial to show how BAD things were, rather than adding a modern cultural spin to it. The ancient world SUCKED. Fact.

  9. A quotation from Euripides

HELEN: Men think me wicked, though I did no wrong:
And for the innocent to bear the load
Of guilt is worse than wickedness itself.

Euripides (485?-406? BC) Greek tragic dramatist
    Helen [Ἑλένη], l. 270ff (412 BC) [tr. Sheppard (1925)]

  10. From our epic launch with Wagner’s Rienzi through #TrialByFire and #HelenOfTroy to our most recent performance, Argento’s Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe, each iteration of #OdysseyOpera’s iconic Ring is based on a solar eclipse. The corona and streamers illustrate the illuminating impact of adventurous, eclectic programming to affirm opera as a powerful expression of human experience.

Enjoy the eclipse tmrw, Apr 8. Then, continue the Odyssey online // odysseyopera.bandcamp.com

  11. Helen of Troy (1867) by Frederick Sandys (English artist, lived 1829-1904). A sulky sideways glance and lowered forehead. This painting is connected to an illustration of Helen with a "spoiled child look" as Troy burns in the background.
