"Yhdysvaltalainen Helen Keller (1880–1968) kuuroutui, sokeutui ja menetti puhekykynsä puolitoistavuotiaana sairastamansa aivokuumeen seurauksena. Hän kuitenkin oppi viittomakielen, pistekirjoituksen ja myös jonkin verran puhumaan. Keller oli vuonna 1904 ensimmäinen yliopiston suorittanut kuurosokea ja luki pistekirjoituksella tiettävästi kuutta eri kieltä. Hän teki elämäntyönsä sokeiden ja kuurosokeiden parissa, ja kävi Suomessakin puhumassa näkö- ja kuulovammaisten aseman ja koulutuksen puolesta.
Kansainvälistä kuurosokeuspäivää vietetään vuosittain Helen Kellerin syntymäpäivänä 27.6.

Kuurosokealla viitataan kuurosokeisiin sekä kuulonäkövammaisiin ihmisiin. Heillä on haasteita esimerkiksi kommunikaatiossa, tiedon saamisessa sekä liikkumisessa.Yhdistys
Suomen Kuurosokeat ry on kuurosokeiden ja kuulonäkövammaisten oikeuksienvalvonta-, vertais-, asiantuntija- ja palvelujärjestö. Yhdistys tarjoaa palveluita kuurosokeille ja kuulonäkövammaisille sekä heidän lähipiirilleen. Palveluiden piirissä on noin 900 kuurosokeaa. Yhdistys perustettiin vuonna 1971, ja se vietti vuonna 2021 viisikymmenvuotisjuhlavuottaan."
