@j Using aurora on the #Alaska787 livery isn't a bad idea. Other Alaska regional themes might have been moose, salmon or crab, besides the Eskimo on their narrowbody fleet. Consider how popular IcelandAir's recently retired #HeklaAurora 757 was. But the IcelandAir special livery was hand-painted to get the detail that made it so popular. Alaska needed a simpler style to minimize cost and time to paint each aircraft. N784HA was in the paint hangar 3-1/2 weeks, which is normal for a widebody.

After not flying for over 3 weeks, IcelandAir's Hekla Aurora Boeing 757-200 was flown to a boneyard at Lleida–Alguaire Airport #LEDA in Spain. Game over. It looks like the sold-out "farewell tour" of #HeklaAurora #TFFIU must have been thoroughly enjoyed by its passengers. They went around the Westfjords, along the north coast, a low pass over Egilsstaðir Airport EGS and across the glacier-covered center of the island back to the downtown Reykjavik Airport (which doesn't usually see 757s). Lots of avgeeks know there's limited time to catch IcelandAir's #HeklaAurora. Many showed up for its landing today. IcelandAir's seasonal service to Portland will end for the year in October. And rumor has it Hekla Aurora will be retired that same month, with all of their 757s retiring by next year. #aviation #travel #avgeek #KPDX #PNW

I didn't realize IcelandAir terminated its SFO route some years ago. So Portland #KPDX is IcelandAir's farthest route from their hub. They've proven the 737 MAX8 can fly to PDX, but only 2 times. It's close to the range limit, likely limited to favorable winds in summer. With not many new A321LRs, they still need 757s for PDX. It might not be a coincidence that October is both the end of the annual seasonal service to PDX and when #HeklaAurora will be retired. #aviation #travel #avgeek #PNW

I drove to Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX to see IcelandAir's avgeek-favorite livery Hekla Aurora TF-FIU take off. IcelandAir will decommission all its 757s by next year, with rumors saying this one will be retired (and scrapped) in October.
