I'd love to see more #HigherEducation Institutions #HEI providing their staff (researchers and teachers) as well as their students the option to use free and open social media platforms. There is no #ads, no #tracking. #Mastodon isn't the only choice; there are many other federated services!

The Candidates' responses in the #DundeeUni “Chair of Court election hustings” gave interesting perspectives on the problems of #HEI and #Dundee in particular.
One quote by Esther Roberton (minutes ago confirmed as the Chair of UoD Court): “When I discovered what principals earn, I was taken aback. […] I had a Chief Exec running a health board with nearly £2bn of a budget, 22.5 thousand staff, and he earned half of what some of our University Principals earn.”

Three things I found interesting to delve into the UK #HEI crisis, case example #DundeeUni (bit more detail: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:share:7399752039225831424/).
The session of the “Education, Children and Young People Committee” of the #ScottishParliament with Professor Nigel Seaton, Interim Principal and Vice-Chancellor and Lee Hamill, Interim Finance Director covered a wide range of concrete challenges and topics in university management.

Today's #marking was brought to you by Gilles Peterson's #Worldwide Show as broadcast on #FM4
https://fm4.orf.at/radio/stories/fm4worldwideshow/Most of it feels today quite dubby and relaxed, probably the best mood for it.

But finally, and maybe most pertinent to #HEI and research, he stressed the importance of playfulness in approaching a topic, and the opportunities to learn and develop through that process.
This is where different streams of inspiration for me meet:

Another analysis showing the “immense strain” on university finances, where teaching AND research often cost more than the income they attract.
The underlying financial crisis means “thousands of personal and professional crises, as university-based researchers—often in precarious or vulnerable circumstances—continually ‘run faster to stand still’”:

For those for whom the Gillies Report* or the hearings at the #ScotGov Education, Children and Young People Committee** are too long, this is a really good thematic summary of the findings and evidence.
The topics and quotes invite reflection, not only at #DundeeUni. It is a bit of a questionnaire of "have you seen this happen?", "have you felt or experienced this?"

Are we alone? No.
Other education sectors are hit as well. Probably equally nonsensical.
Do we even dare to mention #HealthCare? Or #SocialCare?Another example is the contribution of the arts to society and the economy, which are summarised nicely here:
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10037/And I think my favourite disturbing quote from the THE piece is
"Labour is “more interested” in how universities can help these specific missions, like supporting defence" (Andy Westwood) -
How about going after research funding instead? Or especially?
(e.g., UKRI budget for 2025-26 at about £8.8bn: https://www.ukri.org/publications/ukri-budget-allocation-explainers/ )Well, to me it is difficult to imagine a more obvious way to counteract any narrative around growth & innovation.
And this not only at universities / #HEI. Research funding supports industry as well (often in particular #SME), either directly or through strong encouragement to have cross-sector projects.
-
It is also interesting where those impacts manifest:
- government, health, education sector (£52.8bn)
- distribution, transport, hotels, restaurants (£15.4bn)
- production (£12.6bn)
- real estate (£9.7bn)
- professional & support activities (£9.2bn)
[source: see above]Arguably: which inputs are required?
The report estimates funding for teaching at £7.3bn (2021/22 cohort) compared to £94.8bn economic impact. You may have read the "get £13 for every £1 spent" narrative.
