  1. New Moon tonight! As a witch, I try to live by the cycles of the moon as much as I can, so this means I slow down during the dark moon. Today I’ll stay at home and putter around the house; cleaning, writing, knitting, drinking lots of tea.

One thing that has helped me connect with the moon cycle is using a 13 moon lunar calendar instead of the standard Gregorian months. I have a white board calendar in the kitchen that I fill out starting the first day on the new moon. It’s better to visualize when I’m scheduling things, and I try to cluster activities and appointments in the middle, during the full moon.
I’ve also used things like BlankCal to print out custom calendars that start on the day of the new moon instead of the first of the month.

It’s interesting how this small change in the perception of time has affected my witchcraft. Many people, maybe without consciously realizing it, see each new month as a “fresh start.” It's a time to set goals, review schedules, pay bills, etc. Connecting that energy with the moon cycle, instead of some arbitrary date declared by a Catholic pope over 400 years ago, builds a connection with the natural rhythms of the Earth.

Naming the moons based off of the local seasons is another way to live closer to the environment. The Farmer’s Almanac moon names are bullshit because they are taken from many native tribes from vastly different ecosystems and mashed together. If you want to use Indigenous moon names, look up the ones from tribes that originated in your area.
