Looking back on the #HebrideanWay the lack of access to current events was simultaneously a relief and a bonus. I didn't know if the Tango paedophile was dead. Didn't watch much of the most corrupt World Cup. My head really did settle into a beneficial place. I've only been back on the news hamster wheel for a week and I'm already ready to Hulk Smash sh*t up. Burnham's dismissal of our right to referendums just topped it all off. Gah!

Now that I've stopped for the day I feel like I've been kicked up and down the street of your choice. There are easy 15 milers and then there are today. No ticks as yet and it's too windy for the midges if they even exist here. Fairly short section coming up - 7 miles - and I'm dreaming of Lucozade and a Magnum. Possibly some dry roasted. I'd even accept a Ginsters.

Made it to Ardmhor by the skin of my teeth after a very boggy section. Up to my knees once and on my arse twice. Onwards to Eriskay which, luckily, is a bit flatter.

Small bonus! Don't have to charge buses at Fort William. Quick coffee in Sneckie and then onwards! Food, gas and chlorine water tablets also ended up being cheaper than anticipated. Nae porridge available so chilli for breakfast!

Packed my backpack. Double checked everything. Unpacked my backpack. Changed my backpack to an old reliable. That's it except for grub and gas. 5 days or 4 days? There appears to be a load of shops and cafes on the way up. Sabbath Sunday doesn't help. Onwards!

Apparently there's only 1 ferry per day from Oban to Castlebay except on a Wednesday. Hmm. Awkward.

It's taken me a while to get round to writing this up. For one thing, it took me a long time to recover from riding it! I'm now starting to plan my 2026 trips though so I wanted to get this one out of the way before I start up the pedals again.

Apparently, Calmac are rationing bookable bike spaces to the Isle of Barra. Of course, what they don’t tell you is that you can turn up and travel with your bicycle. There are only 12 bookable spaces, but 18 came off the boat tonight.
It’s not entirely clear why they’re trying to limit the number of bicycles on the boat. 🤔This will have serious implications for those planning to complete the #HebrideanWay as limiting the numbers at the start limits the numbers all the way through to Lewis

I cycled the Hebridean way in 1988 and came across Callanish standing stones almost by accident. My first big trip from Australia. I wanted to get away from southern England and Wales so took a train to Oban, Fronted up at the Oban Ferry terminal in the morning and decided to catch the ferry to Barra and island hop with my bicycle. Stumbled on Callanish.on Lewis. It was a great week of cycling. Memorable. The midges were pretty fearsome, though. 3 pics from that trip.
