  1. *One might have imagined that Houston drowning repeatedly, with spectacular financial losses and whole neighborhoods deep under bayou-water, would have depopulated Houston *But nope! Not a bit of it! *Galveston with 6000 weather casualties in 1900, it's still there, too! #Texans #heavyweather

  2. Another afternoon of serious rumbling cloudscapes over the Neckartal here in a muggy southern Germany ⛈️

    And in the skies above these heavy thunderous clouds, a geomagnetic storm is hitting our planet, bringing aurorae to those on the night side 🌏

    Possibly not a good day for cycling 🚴‍♂️😬✌️

  3. I would love to tell you that the game of chicken I played to maximise the length of my ride before this storm arrived ended well 😬

    Instead I get to tell you that riding for 2km in hail is, well, enervating 🤪

    The other 65km were just fine though & now it’s pissing it down outside 🤷‍♂️

  4. The muggy warmth in Western Europe yesterday was followed widespread storms this evening, bringing torrential rain & lots of lightning for much of our drive back from Heidelberg to Wassenaar ⛈️🙀

    Particularly heavy in the Eifel between the Mosel & the Rhine: the whole of the A61 autobahn turned into a six-lane river at one point, which made things interesting 🚛🚗🚚😬✌️

    And it’s beginning to get very grumbly here at home now ⚡️

  5. CW: Long thread/4

    tl;dr:

    * Bad weather is normal at Burning Man (it's a feature, not a bug);

    * Mostly burners leapt to the occasion, which is what people almost always do in disaster situations;

    * This is the second Burning Man #HeavyWeather year in a row;

    * The #ClimateEmergency is tipping the #BlackRockDesert from "extremely challenging" to "impossible";

    * This isn't the last event, place and tradition that will have to be radically reconsidered in light of the climate emergency;
