  2. Now Heavy Gear needs a comeback, too

There are probably some patriotism points for Canadians who get that revival going

  4. I finished some desert camo mechs for Heavy Gear last week. Process was slow, as I layered on 4 colors of individually shaped blobs for the pattern. One of those schemes that's 90% drudge work up front, and then the wash and detail work flies by. This one in particular I think came out best. Some of the others in the batch came out a little frosty from the final varnish.

  5. I won a painting competition! Dream Pod 9's 'Gold Gear 2024' for the Heavy Gear Blitz wargame and RPG. Still a little shocked, but also flattered. I really was proud of how this one turned out. The best I've ever placed in any painting competition before was an honorable mention, so this really made my day.

Full entry list at dp9forum.com/topic/27986-golde there's some really cool ones.

  6. @Slyphic While there is an RSS XML file for grimtokens.garden, I will fully admit that it's not the most full-featured or useful RSS feed ever created.

I usually try to post any updates that I make to the garden on Mastodon and my other social media. If you're following me somewhere, odds are you're seeing any time something is added as I go.

Heavy Gear models should convert over pretty nicely, but definitely scale things as appropriate relative to gears rather than in an absolute sense in terms of expected loadouts.

Don't forget that you will be adding on mods to individual gears, and that takes up tonnage. That won't be going into weapons or armor. It's easy to forget that quite a lot of the team system hinges on various mods being in place, though sometimes it gives rebates. Use that to your advantage.

  8. Working on a jungle table, finished probably a quarter of the 'jungle brush' elements I think I'll need (ran out of materials last night). I'm also not happy with either cloth I have for it; too light or too regular. But they seem to look good with my sorta jungle camo #heavygear models. Craft store plastic plants plucked and chopped and glued into MDF, with moss crammed around the edge to fill it in.

  9. One thought leads to another online and suddenly you're writing an entire thread about how to reboot and re-implement Armored Trooper VOTOMS in a modern TTRPG… And how could I resist that siren call?

  11. An Iguana gear (light mech) for #HeavyGearBlitz. I totally forgot to write down the camo recipe I used on my other stealth gears, so just winged it. It came out more intense and I'm not quite as happy with it, but it'll work.
From this angle and with the macro lens, you can see the hole I accidentally drilled through the gun when pinning it, but which I literally can't see any other time.

  12. I have received from Kickstarter the PDF of #HeavyGear 4e. Heavy Gear has been my favorite game for over twenty years, and I have been playing with the Silhouette Core system since it came out, in several settings.

This new editions uses a system that is clearly a derivative of the Silhouette I love, however takes away most of its simulationist aspects and brings in a narrative-first approach which I really don’t like. It feels like FATE at times, and I say it as a bad thing.

To be honest, this does not come as a surprise as I was also part of the playtest, however I don’t know why reading now the final product I just can’t get into the mood for it.

One aspect I really dislike is tying initial skills to national provenience of the character, in a way that reminds me of the World of Darkness clans (again, in a bad way), and encourages the players to create their own Aptitudes and Quirks that can be used and spent as one-off to obtain a flat 1D6 bonus once per session, whereas the old Silhouette had a really interesting combination of traits and skills that allowed players to create multifaceted characters with interesting emerging narrative giving characters an edge on specific areas of focus, not just once per session.

To reiterate, I think the Silhouette of old is probably the best generic #ttrpg system ever written, versatile and quick to learn and perfect for improvisation - the new one feels like a generic rule-light narrative system with some inspiration from the former.

The book is rich of content however it feels lacking in some areas. The section named Life on Terranova recalls the 2nd edition manual of the same name, however talks very little about society, and the several dozen pages of vehicles and creatures have very little flavor to describe them, leaving more space to stat blocks.

Timeline has advanced, however again it feels like the new era of Terra Nova works better for the companion tabletop game Heavy Gear Blitz! rather than roleplaying. Previous editions had a precarious balance between polar coalitions recovering from a botched invasion of Earth forces where they had to cooperate - the new one has an ongoing Earth occupation, and a world more or less at war, which works for some type of stories, but much less for others in my opinion.

Art is a mixed bag: it’s really nice to see old pieces now in color, and some of the new pieces are actually quite good and fit the mood of the setting quite well in my opinion, while others are completely different and stand out in a way that at least for me breaks immersion.

I am happy to have supported the kickstarter, and I wish Dream Pod 9 all the best, and I will likely continue to buy what they will print, if anything as a sense of obligation towards a game and a setting I have grown fond of - however I will definitely keep playing 2nd edition for the foreseable future.

  14. Trying something wildly different than my usual style here. I wanted a retro space opera-y look, bright and alien, avoiding my usual mundane drab and grimy palette. It's really matte which is throwing off photos but I think it works. Base scale is off a smidge, but eh, works. #heavygear #heavygearblitz #miniaturepainting #miniatures #miniaturewargaming #minipainting #warmongers

  16. Completed a weekend project to design base labels for a few different sets of models. The sides of hexes was easy. The sloped rounds gave me conniptions. Font selection; Industria LT solid for Heavy Gear because that's the classic header font in the books, and Michroma for spaceships because nothing says spaceship like Microgramma-alikes.

I have been waiting for a new edition of Heavy Gear for ages.

Good news is that there is a new edition coming soon!

The playtest was interesting, however I think I prefer the older Silhouette system to the more narrative driven one they are introducting.

Still, I am happy for the new books, and extended campaign timeline. I will probably run my games with old rules, but I am happy the game can live a new life.
