  1. 🌡️ Severe Weather Awareness Week — Day 5: Extreme Heat

Don't underestimate heat. Excessive heat is Wisconsin's single deadliest weather factor since 1982, responsible for 144 deaths — more than tornadoes, flooding, or blizzards.

In Minnesota, only tornadoes and flooding have killed more people than heat since 1990.

  2. Remember that if you're drinking lots of water you also need to take in salt. Drinking too much water without also adding electrolytes can actually *cause* dehydration. So if you're craving salty snacks, HAVE SOME! 🍿

    Stay safe, friends!

  4. The #AFLW #AFLWFinals are about to punish two teams by playing in 34+ degree weather, and one of the teams will have to back it up at the next #Final (prelim) next weekend. At a suburban ground with limited shade and shelter for spectators too

And, of course, no pre-show on TV, because it's important the women aren't treated equally, or they might start to expect a full home-and-away season or something.

  6. ' At the state level, trade groups and lobbyists leaned on [Florida] lawmakers to pass legislation blocking towns and cities from passing local heat-safety rules for outdoor workers....

The pressure worked and the bill [was] quickly signed into law by [Republican Gov.] Ron DeSantis ... The ban came into effect on 1 July as the heat index soared. '

  7. Are there any #publichealth / #heatstress / #heat / #climate professionals on here who’d be willing to briefly consult on a #heatsafety project I’m designing?

I’m trying to make #WBGT more intuitive and actionable for the general public (but especially #construction workers and #running/ #athletes), and I want to modify how the temperature is presented, responsibly.

    Thank you!

(Draft design attached, but seeking expert feedback on things not pictured here.)

  9. The heat protection ordinance for city contractors requires that contractors have a Heat Safety Plan with elements such as availability of drinking water, breaks, shade, indoor cooling, acclimatization protocols, heat safety training, and more. tucsonaz.hylandcloud.com/221ag #heatsafety

  10. A package of measures to protect workers from #heat:
    – make drinking #water more accessible.
    – increased #inspections of potentially dangerous workplaces such as farms and construction sites
    – heightened #enforcement of #HeatSafety violations.
    – hazard alert notifying employers and employees about ways to stay protected from #ExtremeHeat

Plus OSHA is working on workplace heat protection.

  11. #farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die of heat than other Americans. Yet #california is one of only four states with #heatsafety standards, and there are no federal heat protections for farmworkers. My latest Postcard from California for The New Lede. thenewlede.org/2023/07/postcar

  12. Incredibly useful heat recovery information in here!
    TLDR:
-To cool down body, apply coolness to palms, soles of feet, forehead. (Fascinating physiological reason)
-Not too cold or blood vessels will constrict and slow blood flow (not ice)
-Not cool towel on back of neck because it will fool a sensor there into thinking body is already cooled off

  13. #ALwx 🐾 #HeatSafety Advice: Test sidewalks with your hand. Asphalt gets VERY HOT during the day, which can burn your pet’s paw pads. Make sure to walk your dog on the grass and keep walks to a minimum during the afternoon.

If it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your pets!🐶

  17. Green means Good! The Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook is updated regularly by your local National Weather Service and will change color as the risk of excessive heat or other weather elements increases. Go to your local NWS web page to find the GHWO. #NIHHIS #HeatSafety

  18. Did you know the air temperature can actually feel hotter than what the thermometer reads? The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in. To find out how hot it feels, follow this link weather.gov/heat. #NIHHIS #HeatSafety

  19. Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) can be used to measure heat stress in direct sunlight. It takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation). Go to digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/ for the WBGT forecast. #NIHHIS #HeatSafety

  20. Did you know that you can look ahead for excessive heat potential in your area? The Weather Prediction Center produces various Heat Index Forecasts including Probability Forecasts for Heat Index in Days 3-7.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heat_index… #NIHHIS #HeatSafety
