Manager says gap in services leaves people outside during dangerous temps after shelter closes

Published: Aug. 16, 2026#SpringfieldMO (KY3) - "People experiencing homelessness in Springfield are struggling to stay safe during extreme heat, with a daytime shelter saying there are not enough places for people to get out of the heat once its doors close for the day.
"The #VeteransComingHomeCenter gives people experiencing homelessness a few hours each day to come inside, cool down, eat, and get water. But once the shelter closes, many are back outside in the heat with limited options.
"Pastor Mark Glenn, the center’s manager, said he is already seeing the consequences this season.
" 'I’m seeing more cases of #HeatExhaustion. We’ve called an ambulance at least two or three times,' he said.
"During reporting Sunday, a homeless man named Jeff, who had just left the shelter, was found sitting along a sidewalk off Chestnut Expressway. He was only a block from the center and told our reporter that he needed an ambulance.
"Paramedics measured his temperature at 100.4 degrees before transporting him to the hospital."
