  1. Huge El Niño projected to cause 450,000 deaths in next six months

New report predicts a heavy toll from Nigeria to the US – and comes on top of existing impacts of the #ClimateCrisis

More than 450,000 people are projected to die from the additional heat brought by the super #ElNiño in the next six months, according to estimates by climate scientists.

The toll is on top of the early deaths resulting from temperatures already driven up by the climate crisis. It will strike across the globe, from Indonesia to India, and Nigeria to the US. Many further deaths are expected from the droughts, wildfires and flooding that El Niños bring.

The #HeatDeaths have been estimated at regional level, and the researchers said the projections therefore identified where measures to protect people could be put in place and save lives. Such actions could include better heat #forecasts, cooling centres where people can shelter, increased staffing for medical facilities at the hottest times and protections for outdoor workers.

"The death toll during last year's summer—which was the hottest in recorded history for both Europe and the world—was estimated to be 62,775.

This was nearly 25% higher than the 50,798 estimated for 2023's summer, according to the study's newly revised figures. It remained below 2022's toll of 67,873."

"We compared projected heat mortality with COVID-19 deaths in 38 cities worldwide and found that in half of these cities, heat-related deaths could exceed annual COVID-19 deaths in less than ten years (at + 3.0 °C increase in global warming relative to preindustrial). In seven of these cities, heat mortality could exceed COVID-19 deaths in less than five years."

  25. 2023 in Europe:

"Hot weather inflamed by carbon pollution killed nearly 50,000 people in #Europe last year, with the continent warming at a much faster rate than other parts of the world, research has found.

  26. "The CDC’s estimate of #HeatDeaths, about 1,200 Americans a year, is probably at least a tenfold undercount. An estimate from several years ago was that, in the U.S., there are actually in the range of 10,000 to 12,000 heat-related deaths, and that is likely higher today."

  27. "Officially this year, there have been 63 #HeatDeaths in Thailand, at least 143 in India, at least 172 in Mexico, and more than 1,300 in a single week during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. But unofficially, these numbers are a fraction of heat’s true toll. They are often the most obvious cases and are much less likely to account for fatalities in which temperatures played an indirect role."

  28. "The Japanese Association for Acute Medicine said it would add a fourth category to the three-level classification later this year in an attempt to reduce deaths from #heatstroke.

The association said the death toll from heat exhaustion had risen from a few hundred a year two decades ago to around 1,500 in 2022. The sheer number of fatalities suggests that heatstroke now poses a danger on par with that of “a major natural disaster”, it said,."
