  3. In case you wonder if my expensive service plan is worth it, oh yes indeed. In every rental home in Phoenix the homes every summer would have some sort of AC crisis. And yes, each time I had to get us to a hotel room for 1-2 nights. There is also a regular worry if we will have a power outage. I bought a big gas generator that sits on a cart in the garage if we are desperate.

    I learned today the #1 top reason to buy that monthly plan: turns out tariffs are a big problem in getting repair parts. The tech said the reason they have to honor that AC replacement about 3-4 times a year strictly because of the problems caused by The Orange Guy!!!

  4. Oh wow the tech just left and it was caused by a panel that blew off in the dust storm middle of the night! We didn’t even know there was one. Now we know why the filters in the house were chock full of dust! So now we are quickly getting cooler—79° right now. Let me tell you, this is substantially better than the 87° we had gotten to!

  5. Tech just arrived and on roof. He told me there was a dust storm here the middle of the night! I had no idea. However he just changed the 2 large filters in the house and they were chock full of dust! And we change them once a month.

  6. Sooooo today we will learn if my wager I was better off getting the monthly service plan was worth it 3 years ago when we got a new AC and extended ductwork. As of noon it is 83° inside as our system isn’t working. The company is a big national one and the guarantee is a service call with no charges. If they can’t get it fixed completely within 3 days they must install a new one. The call is set for 3-4 pm. Worried.

    Son with seizure disorder can start seizures from the heat. Even his anticonvulsants may not work. Planning to get the car running to cool him down. If the house gets to 95° I will take off to see about a hotel. This is nerve wracking. #Heat #Heatwave #Emergency #Phoenix

    Some statistics about why this experiment

    In France, our grid is mostly (two thirds) nuclear powered with a lot of hydro (10%) to fill the gaps, and then the usual suspects with wind (9%) and solar (6%), according to ElectricityMaps [1].

    So that’s a good three quarters reliable energy and I’m not aware of spot prices from my utility.

    Our prices are constant and mostly regulated, but we can also opt into some degree of variability, where we know by the end of the morning what the next day will be like. And even that is a contractual price that gets revised once or twice a year.

    So…

    During a heat wave, the following happens at the same time (this is according to CarbonBrief [2]):

    • nuclear generates 9% less than usual due to rivers warming up (8 of our 57 reactors use rivers for cooling) and we need to protect the downstream environment, so these reactors are slowed down;
    • solar generates a little less than usual due to efficiency loss, but that’s probably compensated by the absence of clouds;
    • wind generates 30-50% less energy;
    • much increased energy demand due to air conditioning.

    So there. The national grid is all well and good but we can’t draw from it infinitely or at any cost, and we have to do our part.

    Perhaps “not drawing from the grid” whenever possible could work? My experiment shows that a handful of solar panels can completely solve this.

    In France, there are 37 million homes [3] with 8% of them being empty, for 69 million people. About 60% of the inhabitants own their home [4], and 79% of them inhabit a house [5] rather than a flat.

    I’m going to go on a limb and guess that a lot of them have space for 2 solar panels.

    That’s a huge chunk of people who could do the same that I did and not be part of the problem in a heat wave.

  9. Deploying something I purchased awhile back as a heatwave mitigation experiment. This is "aluminet", a reflective tarp which reflects a significant amount of sunlight yet lets air pass through. My thought was having this in a vehicle would enable you to better shelter from heat if you, for example, got stuck in Death Valley if your car broke down in summer. Or the Mojave. Or wherever. #heatwave

  14. Plug-in solar in an urban setting

    Having a really hot summer in France and very few clouds for weeks, I thought I’d do a little experiment with my beginner’s plug-in solar equipment.

    The idea was to change my habits every week and to see how effective my two panels could be at offsetting my house’s power draw from the grid.

    The gist of it is that by merely having my equipment and a small garden, I could avoid drawing almost a third; and by optimizing panels placement, erase two thirds of my weekly electricity usage.

    I’ll be adding my notes further down.

    The solar equipment that I have is

    • 2x 400 W panels
    • 1x micro inverter with two 400 W solar inputs, also one battery connection and one grid connection, each of which can sustain 600 W in both directions at the same time, and maximum 800 W combined to the grid
    • 1x battery with 1 kWh capacity, 1200 W charging rate from the grid and 1800 W output rate (or 2400 W in short bursts)
    • supports for the panels so that they can be placed on the ground, oriented and tilted towards the sun

    The house also has a water/air heat pump (but no air conditioning) that cycles every now and then to keep the water at temperature. It is responsible for perhaps half of the remaining power draw at the best of times (August 11).

    Appliances in the house: ventilation system, fridge, freezer. The house draws 110-280 W depending what appliances wake up.

    As far as using the kitchen this August: I usually took eggs and coffee in the morning, a pot or two of tea during the day, then cooking that required sustained boiling water in the evening. Lunch didn’t require using the kitchen.
