  1. Trump makes it perfectly clear that he places his self mage above providing a way for people who are hard of hearing to understand what he's saying . . .

OK, not really "understand," but still . . .

  2. ⚠️ Heads Up for Hearing Aid🦻 Users:

    2 people
+ two sets Hearing Aids with BT
    +2 cell phone apps (unsynced)
+2 laptops (unsynced) with BT capability
    +one wifi

Do not buy the same brand (Signa) and model hearing aids
Our hearing aids were connecting to each others computers and the company cell phone app and interfering, cross connecting and adjusting our devices!
Apparently the company is unaware and "helpless" !!

    The $8,000.00 tech failure

  3. At first glance it seems obscure, even esoteric, but given some thought it becomes obvious that an easy accessibility win is routinely being ignored.

Hey, @videolan I love you, but you rate 'Could Do Better' in this class. Maybe have a look pls?

In looking through this I see 2 huge flaws -
    1. (beyond mastodon)These are big tech extensions/parts & thusly they're privacy disrespecting pieces of trash.

    2. On the accessibility group/features - they're really only meant for #VisuallyImpaired & #HearingImpaired folks, beyond one that's for temperature regulation issues

*I'm not saying the groups these are meant for don't matter but the one I'm in & need help with is #spinal.

  5. @hosford42 @actuallyautistic
Am not autistic or something "similar".
But definitely would have a problem with background music at a meeting.🤨
I seem to have a problem though with the nowaday habit to have *everywhere* and all the time some background noise or music added.😒 #yt #news #podcasts ...
Why the hell one would want to make it more difficult to listen to someone/the real content? #distraction #hearingimpaired (not in my case but still) #inclusion

    Will never understand.😡

  6. @lauren @klausfiend @taseroth

100%. The "modern" way Hollywood does audio in its films, with dialogue mixed low, actors not speaking clearly in the first place, music or sound effects obliterating dialogue - is particularly galling to me because I have (significant) partial hearing loss. Older films I have no trouble picking up every word of the dialogue, but current films? It doesn't matter how far I crank the volume or otherwise manipulate audio settings, I'm still missing 20% or more of the dialogue entirely unless I turn on captions (which are a poor substitute as Lauren says).

I don't know who in the chain of filmmaking - sound mixer, director, producer, studio head? - encourages the current way of doing things, but I wish a few more of them would develop hearing impairments so they understood what they're imposing on us a little better.

  7. People love to hate on #GenAI, but it really is a godsend for #VisuallyImpaired people, especially around image descriptions. But it's also massive for #HearingImpaired people too, in terms of auto-captioning. And probably a bunch of other disabilities too. Even if you hate #AI, think of all those applications.

  8. I've been messing about with computers for over 50 years but I still find it amazing that I can cycle along with a disembodied American voice in my ears (thanks to #Bluetooth #HearingAids) saying things like "in 200 meeders turn left". Still need to get used to the foibles of #OrganicMaps navigation though, such as treating a mini roundabout as a series of left turns.

  9. It's a midweek special on Deep Cuts in a Lovecraftian Vein, as we look at "The Plant-Thing" (1925) by R. G. Macready - a story that appeared alongside the work of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and others - and meditate on disabled authors at WEIRD TALES.

  11. This is a fantastic article on the Escape Collective on cycling with hearing loss:

"For people with severe hearing loss, listening is not automatic or passive; it is hard, multi-sensory work, an all-encompassing cognitive load. Solo rides, as ever, were an escape, a solace of simple pedal strokes" escapecollective.com/ride-soun

  12. Thanks for your excellent article "The #UX design case of closed captions for everyone" @sebastiangreger!

    sebastiangreger.net/2019/02/ux

Nicely summarizes the many unexpected use cases for #closedcaptions beyond just #hearingimpaired people.

I know your exploration was more qualitative than quantitative, but based on this, would you advocate for captions ON or OFF *by default* for a heterogeneous audience?

Better to have to turn them off each time, or on?

  14. Really enjoying the podcast coming out of mindly.social community....

    podcast.mindly.social/

I couldn't help when I was listening to this thinking that #Podcasting on the subject of #Mastodon by Mastodon admins and moderators honestly is a great thing....

One of the downsides to Mastodon's text based medium is sometimes suggestions and information sharing can come off cold and unfriendly.

    Great job @janie and @KuJoe!

My only suggestion is it would be kind to provide written transcripts for our #deaf, #HearingImpaired, and #AuditoryProceessingDisorder communities. The fact that you've included YouTube as a place for listening covers it for now, and I'm not sure what those communities prefer.... but it might be nice to provide them options.
