  1. New preprint: I got 400 postgrad health management students to use generative AI in an assessment, rather than banning its use. An honest write-up of what worked and what didn't.

The good: most students found it valuable. The structured scaffolding helped reduce anxiety for for adult learners who'd previously been told never to use AI for any assessments.

The less good: most students engaged instrumentally (Which tool is best? How do I prompt?) rather than critically (Which perspectives does this privilege? What are the equity implications? What is this missing?). A single assessment can help normalise AI engagement but probably can't develop deeper critical AI literacy on its own.

If you're designing courses this year and wrestling with AI integration, I hope the case study and design principles we lay out are useful. It's a preprint - feedback welcome.

  2. “Ahead of the curve” means a sci-fi mashup of disease management, commodified loneliness, and idol culture…in 2019.

A reward for prescience in sci-fi would be fun. The categories could be one month, one year, one decade, and lifetime.

But you can only win each category once. Otherwise, it just becomes the William Gibson show. A modern HHH reign of terror.

    Anyway, read this:

  3. CW: évaluation, work-ish query

A niche query, but I'm hoping someone can help. There's a maxim that's often quoted that "10% of the budget should be reserved for evaluation".

I'm struggling to find early references to how this figure was derived/evolved. If anyone has anything more concrete they can point me towards, I'd really appreciate it.
