Reading Guide for chapter two of the ❤️book🖤 #HealthCommunism: Surplus
"The second chapter of Health Communism, “SURPLUS” builds on the concepts introduced in the Introduction, focusing on the historical and present response to populations deemed unnecessary for production. The surplus class includes disabled, chronically ill, elder, unemployed, underemployed, and incarcerated people as well as other marginalized groups pushed out of or to the edges of the mainstream economy and minors.

"We write to say what few others have claimed: the panicking industrialists of the early twentieth century were correct in their hysterics. The severing of health from capital will mark the end of capitalism." #HealthCommunism

What’s the aim of capitalism?
The language of the capitalism game is that of: profit, profit, profit, and that of growth, growth growth 📈 💸
The only thing that matters when playing the capitalism game, is capital accumulation

We only get to the book at around ~ 15 mins in, because we first had to cover this *tiny detail* of how capitalism works :blobcatbusiness:

"the primary sites of violence under capitalism are not those that lead directly to death. They are instead the quotidian forms that situate capitalist belonging; the reproduction of norms socially as well as legally and administratively, abetted by a “cynical din of knowledge production” that institutionalizes logics of eugenics and austerity."

@msteenhagen I read the chapter very different than you. Not as a model of how #HealthCommunism should look like (that would be closer to Act Up in the previous chapters, without getting co-opted, & with intersectionality core and center), but more as a case in point of what can happen, when sick people get together to get organized politically behind anti-capitalist values, the threat this seems to represents to capital. And a state, that went as far as condemning SPK as terrorists etc.

CW: HealthCommunism Krankheit Kapitalismus

Darum: Let's get organised!
Let's.

I can only recommend #HealthCommunism, read this book by Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant (on verso). It offers imho nothing less than a new perspective to the radical left, a new focal point that could join many of the divisions. If we understand how capital is tied to health, one one hand dependent on, on the other hand it commodifies it, we understand the sick/healthy divide is a crucial one.
From the chapter WASTE: "Malingerers of the world unite."
