  12. @angelo There were some big egos involved, or more charitably, at some point a formerly spectacularly good scientist stopped receiving actual feedback on the relevance and impact of the work of his lab members, and got detached from reality.

Was all too clear when a in a big neuroscience conference the then mature Blue Brain Project (precursor of the #HBP) got a whole wing of posters, all about circuit anatomy and function of ... made up neurons. I kid you not. Neurons made up from sparse, partial anatomical reconstructions of mammalian cortical neurons, from which their "statistics" got derived to, a la Monte Carlo-like data augmentation, generate a whole bunch of neurons and cortical circuits and simulate them. They called it a cortical column.

At least today such efforts could be guided by the MICrONs project volume and precursor volumes from Clay Reid's lab, and the barrel cortex column from the Helmstaedter lab. Back then it was all very, very speculative.

  17. On the Human Brain Project: "Europe spent €600 million to recreate the human brain in a computer. How did it go?" (2023)
    nature.com/articles/d41586-023

As a neuroscientist, I can't name a single discovery or technology derived from the #HBP. Perhaps I am being unfair because I don't work on the human brain. But I'd have expected far more bang for all that buck.Imagine, if the subject had been a fly or a fish – far more matched to the technological means of 10 years ago and actually useful to advance our understanding of circuit function in health and disease.

  23. Scary Moment for Albert Pujols After HBP

In June 2016, Albert Pujols was hit in the helmet by Tony Barnette, who immediately checked on him.
Medical staff examined Pujols as both teams watched anxiously.
Thankfully, he walked away smiling with no injury.

  24. Navigating #HBP repayment after separation? The 2019 federal budget brought significant changes affecting divorcing couples in Canada. Remember: HBP withdrawal balances are personal debts to be equalized, not automatically shared. Complete financial disclosure is crucial for fair settlements.

  25. I'm early awaiting next Apple Watch to have some kind of hardware utility for people with High Blood Pressure.

Until then, I think I'll be happy with recommending a normal Blood Pressure cuff with batteries and just annotating the values on a spreadsheet.

YHE BP Doctor Fit looks cool, not going to lie, tho.

  30. Last year I decided to stop living with #HBP

I was already doing the obvious: rarely taking NSAIDS, walking at least 30 mins everyday, and vegetarian.

The doctor doubled my meds. I had a bad reaction and stopped taking lisiniprol (after discovering it is not recommended for more than 5 yrs).

I started monitoring at home regularly, searching for patterns.

Cut sodium to <1 tspn/day, stopped taking HRT, cut adderall from 20 mg to 5 mg, and cut all alcohol.

Still too high. Started taking amlodipine. That stuff is amazing! But still regularly 145-165/90-110. The diastolic is the stickiest.

I switched to decaf a couple of weeks ago and started a working out with weights. More often than not my BP 117-128/78-84.

It’s been a lot of changes 😅 my new goal is to stabilize the blood pressure.

My dad died of an aortic aneurism at 57. Momento mori 💀
