In 1813, John Stuart of the North West Company made his way by horseback from #FortStJames to the Columbia River, with the sole purpose of bringing in the supplies for the next years trade. In 1840 or so Anderson rode over the old brigade trail down the west side of the plateau to the North River. FORT ST JAMES WAS THE CENTRE OF THE HBC BUSINESS in central British Columbia #BC, and this is where the HBC Brigades began their one thousand mile journey south to Fort #Vancouver every year. "Pursued our route at the usual hour, and stopped at Lac du Rocher (which is also covered with Ice), to rest the Horses. In the afternoon we resumed our March and reached the foot of the Mountain at 5 o'clock pm, when we encamped. the road we passed through this day is very rugged and many obstructions occasioned by fallen woods occur. "We discovered that two of the horses were missing, and there being no doubt but that they had been stolen, Mr. James Douglas and three Men set out immediately in pursuit of the Thieves, and in the meantime several Indians who followed us since yesterday were put under arrest, as I was determined in the event of Mr. Douglas's being unsuccessful in uncovering our Horses, to replace one of them with the only Horse these people have. #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades

"At half after two am we left our Encampment and passed the Forks formed by the Junction of the two Rivers which flow from Stuart's & Fraser's Lakes at a quarter past twelve, and Encamped below the rapids of Chal-a-oo-chicks at half an hour after 7. The weather was fine.

GOVERNOR SIMPSON'S JOURNAL, 1828:
"Arrived at the first Lake before seven, and at second by half-past eight o'clock. Breakfasted. Off again by eleven, and reached Long Lake about four o'clock. Total distance, say eighteen miles. The last half of the way very bad. Plenty of water all along. A fine day.
