Story Pile: Hazbin Hotel, Season 2
Anything I say about Hazbin Hotel is going to be filtered first through the awkwardness that is the type of show it is and the conventional cultural framework around that. It’s an adult animated television series — a fraught category, which may bring to mind some successful examples like BoJack Horseman, Venture Brothers, Archer, or most likely, Rick and Morty. I’m not sure these are specifically shows for and by Millenial audiences but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Simpsons have been in production basically my whole life and Family Guy has something like twenty seasons.
Personally, I tend to find adult animation tiresome — not bad, literally tiresome. A not insubstantial amount of it tends to be ‘hey, can you believe I get to make this animated guy make fart noises?’ and, perhaps because of the precarious nature of the industry, where shows can get cancelled or and uncancelled, nobody’s too clear on whether they’ll get ‘enough’ room to tell any story they want to, they often have to repeat plot points or do things to fill out space and the result is shows that, well, they’re tiresome. I find it tiring to watch them. Imagine then that attitude of ‘well, I guess these are a bit of a chore’ then running headlong into Hazbin Hotel and deciding that actually, this is the one that I’m going to think is cool as hell.
Honestly, it’s embarrassing. Of course I like the edgy not-standard-Christian musical with a weird art style and femboy jokes. Of course I would.
Content Warning: Hazbin Hotel has themes of sexual assault and coercion, drug use, lots of violence and swears and religious trauma. There’s a chance you weren’t expecting that, looking at it, but it sure is there.
