Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #hawkesbay, aggregated by home.social.

  1. Odd bit of history/geography:
Hawke's Bay (region of New Zealand), Hawke's Bay (town in Canada), and Hawke's Bay (beach in Pakistan) are all named after Lord Hawke - but not all after the same one!
The region and town are named after the 1st Baron Hawke, but the beach is named after the 9th Baron Hawke (who had a house there in the '30s).

  2. Some areas of the Hawkes Bay are under a state of Emergency again. There's serious flooding and evacuations of people who had only recently returned to their homes.

The climate crisis is not a hypothetical future event. It is here now and our 'leaders' are essentially climate deniers with no intention of taking meaningful action to mitigate its harm.

  3. Friends have covid in their house - first time infected. One hospitalised but others are recovering. Four people in all. It does seem to be spreading a bit in HB.

  4. Sounds like #HawkesBay just had a nice dark thunderstorm - hope y’all safe and dry down there.

  5. Cyclone #Gabrielle struck #NewZealand over a week ago, causing infrastructural damage, and killing at least 11 people. In the #HawkesBay area, lots of apples are grown, and damage is extensive. The photo shows a destroyed orchard, complete with toppled orchard sprayer. We hope the growers in the area can recover from the devastation. It's beyond time to take #climatechange seriously.

  6. A 9pm update from @metservice brings us updated weather warnings, with Orange Heavy Rain Warnings in place for #Coromandel, #Gisborne, and #HawkesBay overnight and into Friday.

This is on top of our already sodden ground, so if you’re concerned at all please prepare your go-bag and prepare to head out.

Heavy rain watches remain in place for #Auckland, #Waikato, #BayOfPlenty, and #Wairarapa - check metservice for specifics

  7. From Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, 17 February 2023

Pharmacists can supply up to 14 days’ supply of medicines without a prescription in Hawke's Bay, Waikato and Northland. Medsafe has extended medicines emergency supply provisions (regulation 44(m) of the Medicines Regulations 1984). More info:

  8. I'm not too sure that everyone understands the gravity of the situation in #hawkesbay. Unison says that there are approx 46,000 homes still without power, including all of Napier. 4hr queues for rationed food, no communications, many still missing, livelihoods destroyed. They lost power Monday morning. There is no information or plan being communicated to remedy this. 1/2 #NZ #napier #gabriellecyclone

  9. Der auf der Nordinsel wütende Zyklon hat Neuseeland eine beispiellose Unwetterkatastrophe eingebracht. Ums Leben kamen auch ein Kind und ein Feuerwehrmann. In Hawke's Bay machte "Gabrielle" 9000 Bewohner obdachlos.

  10. Precautionary evacuation in place. I live about 10 metres from the yellow area on the town side.

The river has breached the stop bank at the left hand (south side) of the map.

3 story house so I think we'll be ok even if we get surprised.

  11. Lower part of Waipawa is being evacuated. Here's the Waipawa bridge and stop bank

  12. Last night I heard a Ruru in our trees. This is the third one I have heard on our property in 2 decades.

Both my partner and I grew up in Akatarawa where Ruru were very common.

It was fantastic to hear it.

Central Hawkes Bay is so open and has no tree corridors so we don't get a lot of larger native bird life in the towns.

  13. 360 panorama from the top of Te Mata Peak, Hawkes Bay. Not sure how this will appear in Mastadon as it's quite a large image and may not be easy to view it.
