Roughly 2,500 people live in Lake Hāwea and 542 of them made public objections opposing another bottle store in the town.
The community made it clear that they don't want more alcohol near a playground, school buses and childcare facilities. "It is believed to be the highest number of objections ever received for a licensing application in the district."
But the committee approved it anyway.
"While the licensing committee acknowledged the scale of community opposition, its decision document said much of the evidence presented was "repetitive"."
Say what? Is it just me, or does this feel like a rubber stamping exercise?
The decision is being appealed.

Contact Energy applied under fast track legislation to be able to reduce Lake Hawea's water levels by as much as 8m. When they felt like it.
Locals were up in arms and farmers joined the protest. It was always a bizarre concept and the government has just rejected the proposal.
If Contact were to build the solar farms they already have consented, they wouldn't need to try it on with this sort of nonsense.

In more bad news for QLDC, the wastewater systems in Wanaka and Hawea are both in desperately in need of upgrades. They're currently trucking waste from Hawea to a treatment plant.
