Martin Mars update! As I was coming back into town yesterday afternoon I caught a glimpse through the trees of #PhillipineMars on a test flight with, presumably, all four engines borrowed from #HawaiiMars now installed!
Even though the navy blue paint job makes it hard to see her, the silhouette is unmistakable. This is a picture from my Mom's bedroom window. Just a speck against the clouds, but proof that she was in the air!
My son was also excited because he finally got to see it in the air a little closer up this time when it flew over the house. He doesn't remember seeing it as a child so he's been dying to get a close view!
He knows the rumble sound though. Like all good #PortAlberni kids of the past 60 years have!
Perhaps another attempt to get to Arizona is coming soon. We'll keep our ears open!

speaking of the Martin Mars….
#PhillipineMars was towed on the water from Pat Bay near #YYJ to Cowichan Bay on Monday. Essentially the other side of the Malahat. The #4 engine will be replaced in Port Alberni, donated from sister #HawaiiMars.
The wildfires may have been another reason they tried so desperately to get down there in December. Coulson's chief US pilot was co-piloting Phillipine. No doubt he's in the USA now.

Excitement is building in town. #PhilippineMars didn't get into the air this weekend as hoped but the plan is still to get it to Arizona before Christmas weather permitting!
They are actually using 3 of the 4 original engines! They discovered a crack in one so they are using an engine from #HawaiiMars!
Official word is:
#1: They'll do a farewell flyby of #PortAlberni but not other Canadian locations, officially.
#2: fly to San Francisco, clear customs, and stay overnight.
#3: Fly to San Diego where it will do a day or two of flights and events.
#4: Fly to Arizona.

@jeffzugale it hasn't flown in over 15 years but it will have two more flights this month! One warmup and systems check probably this week, and then a final flight of its life to its permanent home in Arizona.
It is actually using the engines and propellers from its sister #HawaiiMars because those pieces are still certified flight worthy as that plane was kept flight worthy right up to this year when it went to a museum near Victoria, BC.

It's a big plane. We had to touch her to say goodbye properly! She is likely going to fly out sometime around the 16th to Arizona's Pima Air and Space Museum. This plane has been on (or beside) our lake all 47 years of my life and then some. I will miss her (and her sister #HawaiiMars) very much!!

There were thousands of people there to see Hawaii Mars! Including hundreds on Centennial Pier which juts out into the Harbour providing an excellent vantage point! I still get emotional... especially when everyone claps as it flies off into the distance. 😿

So much #MartinMars content has been popping up on Youtube this past few weeks! Here is a rare video showing the Hawaii (red tail) and Philippine (white tail) picking up water in tandem! Usually the lakes are too narrow to allow for this but this fire was in 2003 in Victoria #yyj (near Thetis Lake) so they were scooping from the Harbour. (Another rarity!)

Damn right Wayne! And the whole province knew it! We fought for years to get the Government of BC to admit it, but corruption and foolishness is really what ended the Mars' firefighting career early.

Though there is a small irony that the CT-114 Tutor is only 18 years the Martin Mars' junior (1942 vs 1960). :) (By first flight)
P.S. the biggest difference between, the CAF have 18 Tutors in storage for parts, full replacements, etc. whereas there are only two surviving airframes of the Martin Mars and very few parts, engines, and propellers. It's time to retire. I’m glad they have both been such a big part of my life!

Here is my video from yesterday's retirement of #HawaiiMars to the BC Aviation Museum. There were thousands of people even in our quite distant viewpoint at Mill Bay from the action across the inlet at Pat Bay. That said, we got a perfect view of the entire approach with the snowbirds and of her final landing. It was fantastic.
I'll miss her very much in flight but I’m so glad she's ended up so close by! We'll visit often!

So glad we went down to Mill Bay to see the #HawaiiMars land at her final place of honour with the escort of nine Snowbirds! I won’t be able to edit the video until tomorrow. We were at a distance, but among thousands on our thin stretch of beach and yet somehow I ended up beside a former Port Alberni resident who worked on the Mars in the 90s. Everyone has a story!
It was moving to see her land one final time.
We are going down to Victoria on Thursday to see the new digs!
