  1. John Boorman – „Der Schneider von Panama“ (2001)

Klassisches britisches Kino. (ZDF, WH)

  3. Theatre fans, don't miss the Harold Pinter plays this week in Smock Alley. Betrayal was deliciously uncomfortable last night, looking forward to Old Times tonight.

  4. Thanks to whoever here that recommended I read Harold Pinter's Proust Screenplay if I continued having trouble reading Proust. I've been stalled on vol. 2 forever but I just devoured the screenplay in less than a day. I think I shall continue trudging through the novel. (Also, I very much appreciated the lack of the madeleine in the screenplay.)

  7. This time, I thought I'd try to deal with the post-moderna pummelling differently. So, this morning, instead of getting under a blanket and groaning, which is what my aching body wanted me to do, I walked 7.5kms and read a Harold Pinter play.
In doing so, I learned the following: Always listen to your body. It knows things you don't know. For example, moderna vaccinations are no Birthday Party.

  8. Just back from seeing David Tennant starring ‘Good’ at the Harold Pinter theatre last night. And… what a strange and frustrating play. The principal actors - Tennant, Sharon Small, Elliot Levey - were all jaw-droppingly good. I enjoyed the direction for the most part - it turned dialogue into physical theatre, and used one bare room’s capability to become everywhere. But the play itself was one of those better described as ‘important’ or ‘urgent’ than well written, or emotionally or intellectually satisfying. I can see why actors of this calibre want to be part of it - it’s an actors’ showcase, forcing them to switch roles, physiques, accents, voices, moods, on an instant’s seamless segue in time, space and viewpoint. And they do it amazingly - Sharon Small is someone I will never forget seeing devour her challenging portfolio of roles. But yeah. The play. Nice idea if not that original. But the writing. Oh gawd. Bit like those people from Hackney Wick Theatre Workshop who came to our junior school to do a piece in which one dressed in green and blue and called himself The Earth and we all had to ask how he felt about people building mines and houses on his face, then sing ‘Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma’ but replacing ‘song’ with ‘Earth’. The writer’s long passed, and was apparently astonishingly prolific, so no shade. But like ‘A Normal Heart’ at the National a couple of years ago - same director, same jukebox agit prop approach - it’s best approached with an eye for amazing theatre craft - and it’s genuinely special for that - and engagement with the issues. And not with any expectation of being a great play in itself.
