Joy Spring – Clifford Brown & Max Roach
This tune popped into my head when I was walking home this evening so after dinner I listened to my CD of the terrific 1954 album Clifford Brown & Max Roach, on which it first appeared. Trumpeter Clifford Brown wrote the tune Joy Spring when he was just 23 for his wife Larue and it became a jazz standard. This first version features a quintet jointly led by Brown and Max Roach on drums, together with hugely underrated tenor saxophonist Harold Land, Richie Powell on piano (younger brother of Bud Powell, whose influence you can hear in his playing) and George Morrow on bass. The whole album is great, but I think the standout tracks are this version of Joy Spring and their version of Duke Jordan’s tune Jordu. Brown’s solo on Joy Spring demonstrates his beautifully crisp articulation and his superb capacity for sustained melodic invention, moving into and out of double-time. He only plays two choruses, but packs so much into them. Enjoy!

Despite it’s happy feel, this track will always be tinged with tragedy. Less than two years after this session both Clifford Brown and Richie Powell were killed in a car crash: Brown was 25 and Powell 24.

Clifford Brown and Max Roach, Study in Brown, 1955 on EmArcy
Brown and Roach are joined by Harold Land (tenor), Richie Powell (piano), and George Morrow (bass). Recorded Feb 23rd and 25th of 1955. Fantastic album.
My copy—via private sale—is the 2021 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue on 180g vinyl, supervised by Chad Kassem, cut by Ryan Smith, and pressed at Quality Record Pressing. As you’d expect, a flawless pressing.

Bill Evans - Quintessence
Late period Evans, on Fantasy, from 1976. On this, he's joined by Harold Land (tenor), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).
A relatively short album, with no Evans originals...but the group does a nice job with these tracks.
I'm going to excuse the bad pun in the title.

Harold Land - Eastward Ho! Harold Land in New York
A recent special on Jazz Workshop LPs prompted me to grab a few, of which this is one.
This 1960 release features Land on tenor sax, Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Amos Trice (piano), Clarence Jones (bass), and Joe Peters (drums), playing a nice set of hard bop.
The Spain-based Jazz Workshop mastering/pressing seems great, flat, centered, quiet. Hooray for $19!

Solid recommendation here from Aquarium Drunkard — a look at 1968’s The Peace-Maker and tenor saxophonist Harold Land’s “understated, if not downright obscured” output (late ‘60s-era Cadet is a goldmine) https://aquariumdrunkard.com/2024/03/12/harold-land-quintet-the-peace-maker/ #jazz #music #bobbyhutcherson #vinyl #haroldland

featuring Bobby Hutcherson
apart from the cheap unpadded inner sleeves i haven't had any quality issues with the Third Man vinyl reissues;
overpriced yeah, but aren't they all...

This is a very cool record from Bobby Hutcherson. However, this particular release (or pressing?) is pretty bad. Very murky sounding, and this copy arrived with a scratch. A rare sonic flub by Blue Note.

Alas, yes! Not in my house, ever since I've heard "Land's End" as a teenager. Love his gritty tone! Took me longer to wrap my mind around his Coltrane-influenced later playing - but most notably the albums with Bobby Hutcherson have long been favorites now, as well! Also his Mainstream albums ... and a recent discovery here, his final (?) one, "Promised Land" (rec. 2000 w/Mulgrew Miller, Ray Drummond and Billy Higgins).
