Crowd Supply's annual flagship event, #Teardown2026, was the biggest and most ambitious yet! This celebration of #OpenSource #HardwareHacking took place in #CrowdSupply’s home base of Portland, and featured 41 talks, workshops, and skill shares, 47 demo tables and installations, plus over 450 delightful attendees. Satellite events included food trucks, a hangout at the Ctrl-H #hackerspace, and a live performance by musicians and sound #hackers! Read my recap here:
-

I've made some adjustments to the solar powered LLM server. I'd say these are pretty good stats (91.5 tps) for a DDR3 platformed LLM server.
Hardware:
Intel Core i7-3930K CPU 6C/12T
Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 Rev. 1.0 E-ATX Motherboard
64GB DDR3 RAM composed of 8 matching 8GB modules
3 x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Blower GPUs
Corsair RM1000e 1000W Power Supply
240GB SATA OS SSD Boot Drive
3 x 1TB SATA SSDs in RAID 0
Advantech Industrial Computer 510 CaseSoftware:
Ubuntu Server 26.04 LTS headless
Netplan
NetBird VPN
Samba
Python 3.12 virtual environment
Docker

🎮🔧VR Airsoft Controllers – Talk, Demo and Hands-On Session at TOG
On Saturday, 29 August, we’ll be joined by the creator behind the VR-Firearms YouTube channel for an afternoon exploring custom-built physical controllers for virtual reality.
There’ll be a short talk on the development of the project, a look at the hardware, a live VR demonstration and most importantly, an opportunity to try the controllers yourself.

My... soldering iron tip broke. What did I do to anger the goddesses?

I want to build a 80x25 character display of out of 16 segment (plus dot) white LED modules.
I found some four character modules that are 40.4x16mm, so I could do 40 80.8x80mm boards for a total of 808x400mm, and based on the 5mA per segment at 3V, about 500W max power draw, though multiplexing seems obligatory here.
The problem is I would have to solder tens of thousands of connections since SMD versions of these don't seem to exist.
But... think of the Bad Apple!! potential!

Day 3 is in full swing! Come stop by!

Ah, yes, because nothing screams "cutting-edge tech" quite like a digital sermon on hacking doorbells. 🙄 Apparently, in the thrilling world of #soundwaves and hidden WiFi, owls and firmware are the new dynamic duo. 🎉 But fear not, dear reader, for they shall preach the gospel of house-bound hardware hacking to those who dare to care. 🦉🔧

Putting the final touches on HHV/SSV for #dc34.
Come hang out, learn some new skills and hack on some hardware with us!

📚🤔 Oh, sure! Let's just casually reverse-engineer an #ASIC in our spare time—because that's totally what normal people do, right? Let's just ignore the fact that it's like trying to unravel a ball of yarn that's been tangled by a hyperactive kitten. 🙄💻

🚀🔍 "Hardware hacking for dummies: a riveting tale of how to waste $10 on a TP-Link router no one asked for. 🤖🔧 Apparently, it's 2026, and we're still diving into firmware like it's the 90s, because why not? 🤷♂️🔥"

I am hard choosing #Pinecil or Alientek T90A.
They are ≈ $54.5, $51.5, with 3 tips respectively.
T90A has c210 tips(seem to be cheaper) It has a cylindrical cap for the tip, so it is safe to carry.
Also comes with USB C cable. But Pinecil v2 is OSHW, FLOSS.
I will be doing probably some modules, PCB, perfboard, not thick wires soldering. Occasional micro soldering to hack devices.
T90 has N32L403 MCU.
Maybe it is an opportunity for me to develop :rust: PAC and HAL for this MCU.
There are official datashits and C code.
Also community made iron schematic. But this will take a lot of time, I am already kind of busy with school, robotics, math. Reverse Engineering is addictive.
What would you choose in my place?

Y'all. My solar powered Hermes debugged itself. SpeechToText was broken. Turns out VRAM was full because I made the LLM context bigger, so the STT model couldn't load. In the end, I used a smaller model and put it back on GPU, but check out what Hermes did autonomously when I told it to fix itself:
-The AI found that the system's GPUs were completely out of memory, causing the local speech-to-text tool to crash.
-It switched the setting to use the CPU instead.
-The change failed at first because the underlying code ignored the new setting.
-The AI located and fixed these bugs, updated the code to correctly read the CPU setting, and restarted the system.
-After reloading, the system successfully transcribed voice messages.Folks, LLMs may not be "intelligent" but they're capable at specific tasks. I checked Hermes code on Github and found this actual bug is real !!

The local solar powered AI server is tweaked pretty good - the 3x 2080 ti being able to pull near 750w is literally all 3 at max power combined. All on DDR3/PCIe3. And folks told me it would be slow 😆 Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-UD-Q4_K_M.gguf is the model of choice for now, and grants a 256k context window.

Everyone loves to see cool hardware hacks, but nobody talks about how much stuff we buy and either don't get around to or don't manage to hack it. 😅

Took a 2015 13" MacBook Pro with a dead display and turned it into a "headless" Mac desktop setup!
I removed the entire screen assembly, wired it up over HDMI, and installed macOS 13 Ventura.
