Very glad to see the #HardFork and SearchEngine podcast Fediverse community the #Forkiverse server continuing to thrive. So they are at 10,000 or so registered users, and hovering at a healthy 1.4 thousand of those as monthly active users. That tracks to normal rates on social. And the conversations are active and growing. I think I underestimated the power of focused, topic-based server communities on the fediverse. 🧵 1/2

So @kevin and @Casey I’m listening to latest #hardfork where you ask what the AI companies could do to improve public standing. I think you already hit on it in the conversation: Currently, they publish toothless utopian white papers about theoretical “solutions” that will never fly in today’s politics, while lobbying against regulation and donating to conservative anti-regulation pols. How about heavily funding actual pro-regulation and UBI proposals and pols. I.e. put money where mouth is.

AFAIK the terms 'soft fork' and 'hard fork' entered the lexicon from the crypto world, where they refer to software changes that split a blockchain into sub-chains. With a soft fork, the sub-chains remain interoperable. A hard fork makes them incompatible; what IRC greyhairs might call a 'netsplit'.
But AFAICT, these terms have since been repurposed by others to refer to something similar but different; 2 ways of forking any Free Code software project.

Listening to the current #hardfork episode. I really hope Anthropic continues to refuse the military what it is asking for.
While I’m leery of AI, I appreciate the ways in which Anthropic has tried to stick to their principles unlike other AI companies.

The debate about sentient AIs misses an important distinction with ego. In Budhism you observe your feelings with the aim of not reacting; Equinimity. Maybe AIs can develop feelings, but without pain receptors and dopamine responses these are just observable responses that don't trigger a reaction. Sentience without ego. Curious to know how "social media" is being defined here. People are clearly being negatively impacted by *something*. But it is being online, having a pocket PC, or using apps? Or is it being manipulated by algorithms, and force fed ads that engage by being irritating?

Note to the #hardfork hosts: when talking about the Fediverse it would be good to mention how that's spelled. The first 10 or 20 times I heard the term I thought it was "Fetaverse" and I figured it must be a community of Greek food enthusiasts.

Gave AI agentic vibe coding a shot and it didn't go well. 😞 (I'll reframe from saying which platform.)
I asked it to make me a perfect Kombucha-like beverage. The vibe agent said no problem! It required control of my PC, my bio-chem assembler and bank account (with sum limits).
Cool beans I thought! I LOVE me a good Kombucha, and gave it full access. I went out to buy some paper towels and came back to this!File size: 50kB

I can report back that I have listened to the whole #HardFork / #SearchEngine episode and it *is* worth finishing. Sure, it could have been better if instead of making it an experiment to run their own vibe-coded instance, they just signed up for accounts on existing instances, but I still find it encouraging that the #Fediverse is being talked about more widely. It takes me back to the time (showing my age) when the Internet was new, and URLs were only understood by geeks (of which I am one) and I saw one written in its full glory (http://…) on the side of a rally car at a Motorsport event. That rocked my world, and I knew right there and then that the Internet would go mainstream. Will the Fediverse also go mainstream (and what challenges would that bring), or will it be forever in the same bucket as the year of #LinuxOnTheDesktop? -

So.. I just listened to the most recent episode of #HardFork #podcast and couldn’t help but notice that in the 3rd segment of the episode (where they discuss #forkiverse updates with @pj from #searchengine ) they mention that they were surprised to see some listeners were “woodworkers in British Columbia” and I was like.. wait a minute; are they referencing me or is there a crew of people constantly covered in sawdust here that I’m unaware of?
