I was aware that one of my ancestors, Anders Øyelson, was an early fiddler from Voss. I’m discovering that his work is remarkably well preserved. I have transcriptions of several of his tunes sent to me by the Hardanger Voss Folk Museum. Even more striking is that Einar Mjølsnes, a modern Voss fiddler, recorded a CD of the tunes of Anders Sagen, a 20th century fiddler. Five have attributions tracing them back to Gamlehagen.

Kenneth Lien and @counivers – Norsk Elektronisk Folkemusikk: Allying #hardangerfiddle and jaws harp with the kind of beats found in electro-halling, disco-gangar and springar d'n'b is still a novel idea .. familiar dance staples like the Roland TB-303 and TR-909 flex their elegant muscles against instruments that have been around for hundreds of years and the outcome is a real ear -opener. #musicreview https://freq.org.uk/reviews/kenneth-lien-universe-norsk/

Benedicte Maurseth – Mirra .. curls of fiddle appear like breath from the reindeer's mouths as the light touch of snow across the landscape obscures the steaming bodies. Sounds scatter and sprawl against a circular vibes motif and a wider selection of creatures makes an understated appearance. You feel lost in the open spaces, the #Hardangerfiddle's waver surprisingly gentle, its comfort in the forbidding landscape clear. #musicreview #norway #reindeer https://freq.org.uk/reviews/benedicte-maurseth-mirra/

Erlend Apneseth – Song Over Støv Erlend Apneseth's love of the #Hardangerfiddle, Norway's national instrument, has led him on some spectacular journeys over the years.
2022's venture Nova found him exploring its evocative sounds on his own, ruminating on its harsh yet reflective tone. For the follow-up Song Over Støv, he has gathered a group of fellow travellers amongst whom are another three Hardanger players as well as another eight instrumentalists #jazz #folk https://freq.org.uk/reviews/erlend-apneseth-song-over-stov/

Malmin – Med Åshild Vetrhus Using the likes of #Hardangerfiddle, mouth harp and langeleik, the duo seems to have taken it upon themselves to take original recordings of these venerable pieces and manipulate them to their own ends, then thrusting them into a modern environment to see how they might exist amongst their younger siblings. #norway #folkmusic https://freq.org.uk/reviews/malmin-med-ashild-vetrhus/
