Nose to Nose:
Currently it is Car Week in Monterey Bay, and while I normally have a passion for All Things Transportation, I'm feeling like a bit more peace and quiet this weekend.
So, while that goes on for a different kind of Wild Life, here is a more peaceful moment of a Harbor Seal Mom and Her Pup Connecting with Each Other from this last April:

Two Pair:
One of my very favorite places is Hopkins Marine Station Beach in Pacific Grove, and of of my very favorite times is when the Harbor Seals are pupping. This last spring was my 3rd year hanging near this protected area where our local mothers have the ability to birth and nurse their young in relative peace.
Of course, the Seagulls are...
Well...
Seagulls...
(BTW - taken with a 400-800mm lens, so as not to disturb the moment)

Relaxin'
A Mother and Pup California Harbor Seal are relaxing in the shallow water, on a small section of beach located between Hopkins Marine Station and Lovers Point.
Pacific Grove (Monterey Bay) California.

🦭 Chill Lessons
(My day job has kept me busy this week, but here is another Harbor Seal Pups image from this last Sunday)
Hopkins Marine Station Beach was mostly empty this past weekend, but a small group were hanging on a strip of beach located between Hopkins and Lovers Point.
Apparently part of the training process for young Harbor Seals is to learn to Chill With Style.
I believe our young silver pup was the award winner for the day.

🦭 Secluded Spot for a Miracle
Since there wasn't a lot of Harbor Seal activity today at Hopkins Marine Station and it was too nice to go home and do chores, Evelia and I ended up at a surprisingly uncrowded Point Lobos SP (Thank You Poppy Pass!)
Most of the photography there was low-effort, but tucked into a very secluded spot along the cliffs was what appeared to be a very recent birth, with the most of the pup's umbilical still intact:

🦭 Trying to Get a Snack
Most of the Harbor Gals around Hopkins Marine Station Beach have pupped, and are spending time in the water more. So the beach was empty today when Evelia and I stopped by.
Even so, there was a small number of Moms and Pups a short ways away between Hopkins and Lovers Point.
This one still had its umbilical and appeared to be a recent birth.
I don't normally post video, but the Awww factor on this was high. 🥹

🦭 Naptime at Harbor Daycare
More than 40 Harbor Seal Pups have been born at Hopkins Marine Station Beach as of the end of this week.
With that, late mornings and early afternoons are starting to get that "daycare" vibe:

🦭 Nose to Nose
Another Harbor Seal Pup image from Sunday at Hopkins Marine Station Beach.
These two had just come in from a brief swim in the shallows and Mom circled back for a moment to check if the kid was all right.

🦭 Best. Pillow. Ever.
Sunday was a beautiful day in Monterey Bay, made more so by the collection of new Harbor Seal Pups at Hopkins Marine Station Beach.
This pup clearly had found the ideal napping position as they and their mom snoozed in the warm sun.
-
🦭 As of this weekend, more than 2 dozen Harbor Gals have pupped at Hopkins Marine Station Beach in Pacific Grove California.
So far this year I have not had much luck with being present during a birth (the downside of having a day job), but today was beautiful, with only occasional bursts of light rain. As such there were countless opportunities of Mom/Pup shots to be had.
More to come over the next few days as I work through the stills.

Monterey Bay Harbor Seal pics from this past weekend:
I have a number of neat shots of this Harbor Gal and her pup, as they spent all day Sunday being very chill, mostly lounging on the beach, but periodically taking a quick dip into the water, probably to cool off on an unusually warm day for the bay.
And yes, the water was that clear...

Monterey Bay Harbor Seal pics from this past weekend:
Based on the image, this Harbor Gal looks like she is having the time of her life. But in reality she was in in a foul mood all day; and I strongly suspect in labor.
For the 4 hours I was around on Sunday she never stayed still, moving from the shore to the water, then to the rocks, and periodically barking quite loudly.
I would not be surprised if she has pupped by now.

One more Harbor Seal and Pup Pic before calling it a night.
Hopkins Marine Station Beach.
Pacific Grove, California.

As of this morning (and per one of our resident experts), there have been about 8 or so pups born at the Hopkins Marine Station Beach.
About half of those were hanging with their moms yesterday and today. The calm seas and incredibly beautiful weather in Monterey this weekend has meant that most of seals (and pups) are out in the water.
So, fewer photo opportunities. But still...
Next weekend will likely be peak pupping at the beach.

April is when the Monterey Harbor Seals pup and there have been about a half dozen so far this year.
So, most weekends this month you will find me at the Hopkins Marine Station Beach.
No pup here (I'll have some over the next few days), but a neat shot of one of the Harbor Gals leaning into that 1st wave on the way out the harbor today.

Today is #InternationalSealDay - So I may be sharing some of my favorite Seal pics taken over the last few years:
One of the truly special places in Monterey Bay is Hopkins Marine Station, which has a restricted cove and beach, allowing many of the local Harbor Gals a safe place to Pup.
Around here, activity is pretty high in the late March through April time frame.
Some more Mom & Pup moments from April 19, 2025:

This live birth moment was in mid-April of last year.

While I've yet to see a Pinniped that I thought wasn't cool, California Harbor Seals are my favorites.
They do "chill" better than any of the others, and are a perfect antidote to doom-scrolling on a #SilentSunday morning.

Japan’s Environment Ministry is looking to use underwater acoustic devices from fiscal 2026 to keep Hokkaido's Kuril harbor seals from stealing salmon and mackerel from fishing nets. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/03/16/japan/kuril-harbor-hokkaido/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #hokkaido #oceans #harborseals #capeerimo

Alameda's harbor seal float is beginning to overflow. Richard Bangert reports that when the float was jam-packed at the beginning of December, about a dozen seals took it upon themselves to rest on Saildrone’s plastic dock in Seaplane Lagoon instead. https://alamedapost.com/features/nature/harbor-seals-rest-on-commercial-dock-in-seaplane-lagoon/

Just a Little Shy:
Sea Lions get a lot of attention here in the Monterey Bay, as they are so... Extroverted...
But honestly I prefer the local Harbor Seals. Every single one of them seems to have the soul of a clown inside.

I hope to be able to make it to the release of these two extremely precious harbor seals today! Juliet and Echo are rehabilitated and ready to return to the ocean. They are being released in Kenai today at 3pm. #Alaska #AlaskaMarineLife #HarborSeals #AlaskaSeaLifeCenter

People are harming the Bay's wildlife --often out of misplaced concern.
Marin in particular "has an exceedingly high number of severe disturbances with young seal pups, which can be life-threatening interactions,” said Giancarlo Rulli of the Marine Mammal Center.
Bottom line: if you see an animal in distress, do NOT approach it. Instead call the center’s hotline to submit a report: 415-289-7325
