February 24, 2025"A harbor seal at a New Bedford zoo died earlier this month from complications of avian flu, officials said.
"Blue, a 21-year-old harbor seal, died last week due to complications from highly pathogenic avian influenza (#HPAI), commonly known as avian flu, the Buttonwood Park Zoo said on Facebook.
"Blue likely contracted the virus through contact with an infected wild bird, according to zoo officials."

King Eider:
Well, it would be a Queen Eider, in this case. Eiders are large diving ducks (although they will sometimes feed at the surface like dabblers). King Eiders nest in the far reaches of the north. The migrate down the coasts, but are not common in our area. And, they are threatened by climate change, fossil fuel extraction and other human impacts. I was hoping to see this bird, and lucked out. This precious harbor seal was rescued and is currently being cared for at Alaska SeaLife Center. It has been determined that the seal has very limited sight and may even be blind. NOAA will make the determination as to whether or not she is releasable. She's darling! 💗
