The other day we arrived in Phobjikha and headed to the crane centre and a storm blew through but first it lit up the other side of the valley :)

Dancing monks in Bhutan. Late in the day there was one final "masked dance", and in many ways the most significant. The Black Hat Cham.
They timed it to perfection, with the last monk disappearing back into the temple seconds before the light fell behind the mountains.

Today we left Phobjikha Valley and are spending the night in Trongsa. On the way we stopped into Chendibji Chorten, where they now have a small gompa for very young novice monks.
It was a very good day today.

If you ever travel to Bhutan make sure you leave enough time here to journey all the way to Gangtey in Phobjikha Valley. It's a real gem of Bhutan. Potato farmers, migratory cranes, a magnificent gompa and some beautiful forests.

Just can't describe how lovely it is to be here.
I spent the last 90 minutes enjoying a "hot stone bath". Imagine a wooden tub not unlike a water trough, but one end has a timber divider to keep the boiling hot rocks away from your toes. When you want it hotter, they just drop another hot rock in there for you. A log fire outside the shed is where they heat up the rocks. Radiant heat, in a wooden tub. Magic.

Stopped at the gompa in Lubra and the locals were holding a puja for the full moon. They let us join in. Very beautiful moments in that lovely old building, with the traditions keep alive by the village folk.

One more from this morning. Beside the Kali Gandaki River the pilgrims set fire to candles and make offerings to their gods. I am not a religious person at all, but I do find it fascinating the detail and passion that goes into such fevered devotion.

Photo Essay "Bhaktapur in Gold"
This week in Nepal the festival of Dashain is gathering pace, and the streets of Bhaktapur are awash with offerings to the gods. It's a deeply religious Hindu holiday and even some of the blokes get dressed up nice for the event.

I find the expression of religion in Nepal to be quite beautiful. It's very fluid and inviting of many expressions. Never rigid. They make room for everyone.
I am not a religious person, but I see beauty in the people of Nepal and their cultural fluidity.

Good morning from Nepal. Dashain is getting into full swing here. Lots of chickens and goats at the market. The entire town is out to make offerings to their gods. School bands are wandering the streets playing flutes and drums. It's just a little bit marvellous today.
