UK Parliament: A journey into history – Hansard records dating back to 1803 now available online. “Hansard – the official report of Parliament – has added around 130 volumes from the 19th and early 20th centuries to its online database, completing its online archive. The Hansard website now provides users access to debates and proceedings not previously available in digital form.”

CW: Canadian Veterans' Cannabis
I'm not faulting Mark Carney for considering money spent on Medical Cannabis, since I believe it is overpriced, for insurance reasons.
But, politicians think in dollars, not in medical benefits.
It's not all dried flower, creams, tablets, capsulesIt costs $245 million for Veterans' medical cannabis and $63 billion for national defence: so, that corresponds to 0.389% of the spending money, that the government spent to get Military members injured, is spent to help them heal or improve. And the reduction now, gives me 60% of my prescription.
I don't think a Budget should reduce medical money for injured veterans while finally increasing the budget for the Military and NATO commitments. You have more injured veterans and you reduce the amount?
I'm not the only veteran PM Carney that is concerned. Letters have been written
https://www.ourcommons.ca/documentviewer/en/house/latest/hansard“The government is now claiming that Bill C‑15 will generate $4.23 billion in savings by reducing cannabis reimbursement rates for veterans. Let us look at the actual numbers. VAC spends roughly $200 million a year on medical cannabis. The government is cutting the reimbursement rate to 60%
That is roughly $50 million in annual savings.
Even over many years, the math does not come close to $4.23 billion. The government has not explained the gap.” — Hansard, House of Commons Debates, March 12, 2026.Bankers know these numbers?
There isn't a good excuse
PM Carney for this reduction, but I will tell you the spin-off costs. After 33 years of service, we were seeing less and less new recruits. The Canadian Armed Forces is under strength, and even with long hair and personal identity, recruitment is down1/15 complete recruitment, expecting to recruit 20K and not reaching 15k recruits is still a significant shortfall. We who have worked with these low numbers of personal, know how limited Canada is in Military strength.
Entice them a little? Tell them you will cut their benefits if they are injured https://forces.ca/en/
I'm third generation Military, it was all we ever knew. Folks that might consider joining, have asked me questions over the years, and I've encouraged others to join, and the conditions were not bad, and benefits were there.. Well, I thought they were. Mr Carney, you've disappointed Veterans. /FIN

Edit: https://data.mysociety.org/datasets/uk-hansard/ is what we will probably use instead of scraping. Thanks, #fediverse!
Do I know anyone (who knows someone else) who is working on #Hansard online? I'm trying to help a researcher get texts from UK parliamentary debates around a set of topics. We'd like to get permission to scrape, but her scraper gets blocked and her emails go unanswered.
Boosts welcome.

‘#TemuTrump’ is now in #Hansard
The next question is from #Greens MP Stephen Bates, who asks:“#Albo, why would you invite #TrumpCoup to #Australia when you have a Temu Trump sitting opposite you right now!”
He’s immediately asked to rephrase the question.
Attempt two from Bates is much more serious:
“Given Trump’s #attacks on #democracy & western institutions, & even #threatening our #allies & even the PBS [Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme], why would you #invite him to Australia?” #auspol

Big historic Hansard news! Thanks to information from the Dept of Parliamentary Services I've finally been able to access XML files for Australian Commonwealth Hansard between 1981 and 1997. This means I've been able to run a complete harvest of *all* the XML files from 1901 to 2005 for the very first time. I've just pushed all the XML files to the Hansard-XML repository. More info to come! https://github.com/wragge/hansard-xml #histodons #digitalHumanities #hansard

Eight years ago I downloaded about 80 years worth of Australian #Hansard from ParlInfo and created the Historic Hansard site for 'lovers of political speech'. I'm planning some updates in the next few months, so I thought it was a good time to pull together some threads documenting my adventures with Hansard.
If there's anything you'd like to see in the new version of Historic Hansard, let me know. Also, as it says in the post, it costs me about $400 a year to run, so contributions are welcome!

Hey Australian #Hansard fans, I've done a complete reharvest of all of the Hansard XML files from 1901 to 1980 from ParlInfo. There's been lots of improvements/corrections, and most of the file names have changed (they now have a version flag). The improvements seem to be ongoing, so I'll try to harvest more regularly from now on. You can download the lot here: https://github.com/wragge/hansard-xml
I still need to load the updated XML into the Historic Hansard site, but that's going to have to wait for a month or two... #digitalHumanities #histodons #ozhist

'#Extremism' presents no threat (#MaryBerry is extremist on some topics) but #Gove is redefining terms
Extremism threat to state,1975:
"The Government use the description of subversive activities...first formulated by Lord Harris of Greenwich...those which threaten the safety or well-being of the State & which are intended to undermine or overthrow Parliamentary democracy by political, industrial or violent means".#Subversion (Definition) (#Hansard, 15 June 1984)

You can read in #Hansard, the unease in 1984 when the #Tories under #Thatcher flogged #WytchFarm in #PooleHarbour. They knew it was a national asset and showed a distinct lack of care regarding the conservation of the area of outstanding natural beauty then.
It was considered to be worth between £200,000,000 and £400,000,000 at that point.
#Conservatives haven’t conserved anything beyond statues, FPTP and wealth for a very long time.
