De la smorfia napolitana a la isla de Epstein, una lectura sobre el poder, la impunidad y la banalización extrema del mal en las élites globales.

9 febrero, 2026Según parece, el origen de nuestra quiniela se remonta a la “smorfia” napolitana, una manera de interpretar los sueños con números que remiten a personas, cosas, acontecimientos. El origen de tal “smorfia” se pierde en el tiempo, algunos aducen orígenes pitagóricos, otros la ligan a la cábala judía, siempre en la tradición mediterránea. Consiste en la articulación entre Morfeo, el dios griego de los sueños, y las interpretaciones para la vida que es una lotería.
Por supuesto que llegó a nuestras costas, y así pasó de 90 números a 100 para convertirse en nuestro I Ching arrabalero. Hay que decir que la “smorfia”, como la quiniela, están bien vivas. Así, ahora Maradona en Nápoles es el 10, como corresponde. También subsisten similares significados para idénticos números en ambos lados del Atlántico, por ejemplo, el 48 es “il morto chi parla”, el muerto que habla. Como Jeffrey Epstein. ¿Y qué nos dice?
Comenzamos por el final. Primero, las cárceles norteamericanas no parecen muy seguras para los internos. Segundo, el debido proceso es aleatorio y arbitrario. Tercero, las últimas palabras de Epstein pudieron ser “por favor, no lo hagan”. Como las incontables víctimas que pasaron por las garras de Jeffrey y comitiva, al menos las que tenían edad para hablar.
Porque de todo el fárrago de horrores que el Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos develó acerca de los crímenes cometidos en “la isla de Epstein”, ninguno parece más abyecto que el desmembramiento de bebés para posterior banquete caníbal de los asesinos. Y eso que en materia de degradación civilizatoria no han dejado delito por perpetrar. Existe un antecedente citado por Jonathan Swift en “Una modesta propuesta” (1723), donde propone que los ricos compren los bebés de los pobres para comer carne de recién nacido, tan suave y deliciosa. Pero los libertarios son literales, y no entienden qué es una metáfora, ni la ironía, solo comprenden y practican la violencia impune.
Hay que decir que la documentación publicada de manera oficial es parcial y está censurada. Salvo el nombre de varias víctimas, claro (!). Largas bandas negras ocultan la identificación de los criminales, ocultan las pruebas de abusos sexuales sobre menores muy menores, así como las imágenes y videos de las torturas y de las ejecuciones. Quizás así recreaban una siniestra “Invención de Morel”, que también transcurre en una isla, donde en vez de evocar la amistad perdida como en la obra de Bioy Casares, pudiesen relamerse con las vistas del dolor en muertes de agonía solo para gozar una y otra vez, siempre repetidas y siempre distintas, en el eterno goce de los torturadores al disfrutar la barbarie. Como siempre. “Me encantó el video de la tortura”.
Desde el más oscuro girón del infierno, Epstein nos dice que no estuvo solo. Y tiene razón. Así como en la “lista de Schindler” encontramos a quienes pudieron escapar del aniquilamiento nazi, la “lista de Epstein” es la nómina de quienes rompieron o terminaron vidas para siempre. Cuando Hannah Arendt cubrió el juicio a Eichmann para The New Yorker en 1962, determinó que ese criminal no era un psicótico, sino un ser ordinario, frustrado, burócrata. Apenas un “especialista” en masacrar personas a gran escala. Así nace el concepto de “la banalidad del mal”. En la isla de Epstein encontramos gente sobresaliente, empresaria, realizada. ¿Son psicóticos? Quizás apenas “financistas” del mal excepcional. Transfiguración y continuidad del fascismo.
Pero no podemos quedarnos en la caracteropatía de Epstein y los amigos célebres de Little St. James, tal el nombre de la isla. Eso dará tela para los profesionales de la mente. Nosotros nos embarcamos en la consideración de la violación de cualquier ética, moral y norma por personas que no podían ignorar lo que hacían, y que lo realizaron por un comportamiento social. Es más, lo que hicieron lo hicieron porque sabían que eso estaba prohibido por los dioses y por las leyes, desde que existieron dioses y se redactaron leyes. Lo hicieron para estar por encima de los dioses y de las leyes.
Tal vez usted no lo sepa, pero en algunas mesetas del interior de Camerún existen jefes bamilekés, llamados Fon, que ostentan caracoles que vienen de las lejanas playas. Las usan como collares o muñequeras, siempre como joyas, para mostrarles a los demás que “mi mano llega hasta el mar”. Yo mando. Es la construcción y ejercicio de poder simbólico, que no es el menor de los poderes. Nos dice: “tengo algo que ustedes no tienen”. Pero los Fon bamilekés no trafican menores, no violan, ni practican asesinatos rituales, además se atienen a las normas que fundamentan el propio poder. Incluso los jefes tribales deben respetar la ley o ya no son dignos de conducir. Es más, ni se les pasa por la cabeza: es que los ancestros no perdonan y siempre vigilan. El grupo social que sí comete esas barbaridades es occidental, diz-que “civilizado” y a eso lo llaman “fun”, que quiere decir “diversión” en inglés.
Un respetable banquero estrangula a una nena después de violarla. El Príncipe de York, Andrés de Mountbatten-Windsor, con largo historial de violín, tortura a otra menor después de vejarla y luego ordena que le den muerte. Eso le da asco hasta a Macbeth. Pero la Princesa de York dice que quiere casarse con Epstein. Una británica experta en biotecnología le propuso tener un hijo juntos. Eso le da asco hasta a Lady Macbeth. Otro Secretario de algo de Estados Unidos deja embarazada a una niña de once años. Perversion as usual.
Un profeta del espiritualismo posmoderno como Chopra afirma que “Dios es una construcción, pero las nenas lindas son reales”. Mejores si son menores, ¿no? Ni hablar de grandes empresarios para quienes unas noches con Epstein son una marca de nivel. “Pertenecer tiene sus privilegios” (no los suyos, claro, los de ellos), como los de violar, torturar, matar, ser Satanás por unos días. Y después compartir el souvenir de fotos y videos para comentar con los amigos y preparar la próxima juntada. Los pederastas con poder son una gran familia. Y un comportamiento social de la más alta clase dominante. Allí encontramos a los grandes apellidos de la nueva revolución digital.
Elon Musk solicitó ser invitado para el día de la fiesta más loca, pero desde la aparición de los hechos se planta en el rol de moralista. Bill Gates aparece más comprometido. También existen contactos con el fascista Peter Thiel, dueño del sistema de espionaje Palantir; Reid Hoffman, del MIT Media Lab; Larry Page y Sergey Brin fundadores de Google; Mark Zuckerberg, el ángel de Meta (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram); Jeff Bezos de Amazon y siguen las firmas. Por cierto, no todos fueron a la isla de la fantasía, pero todos están en las listas. ¿Podrían ignorar lo que hacía Epstein? ¿O Epstein era importante porque hacía esas cosas? Por más que sea digital, verificamos eso que decía Marx acerca del capital que “chorrea sangre y lodo por todos los poros”. Lo que no sabíamos es que esta nueva forma de capital emergería en las playas de la isla de Jeffrey. Rutilante.
En los contactos de Epstein abundan los dirigentes políticos. Monarcas orientales, premiers israelíes (Barak, Netanyahu), presidentes de Occidente (Bush, Clinton, Trump), de Sudamérica (Pastrana), dirigentes europeos (Blair, Mandelson), príncipes y princesas herederas de tronos escandinavos que participan en las fiestas o le recomiendan la prole real a Epstein para acreditalres “un fin de semana de sexo salvaje”. Una Rothschild agradece al anfitrión “la caza” realizada en St. James. ¿Cuáles serían las presas? La isla de Epstein es un must, un deber, un must-have, un debes-tener, siempre para ser. Para ser poderoso de verdad. Ser un violador impune es ser algo que ningún mortal puede tener. Después de todo, ¿eso era jugar a ser una divinidad, no?
Ese juego del Diablo y Dios tampoco es nuevo, lo tenemos en la literatura desde hace tiempo, en particular con el “Fausto” de Goethe (una parte publicada en 1790), cuando un sabio pacta con el diablo entregar el alma a cambio de la juventud. En el caso Epstein, lo que se entrega es el cuerpo y alma de otras y otros a cambio de la vida eterna. Se ve que Jeffrey sabe la diferencia entre valor de uso –las nenas que ultrajo- con valor de cambio –las nenas que dejo que otros revienten. En eso estaba este tal personaje. Porque Jeffrey Epstein no se consideraba un “especialista” como Eichmann, ese genocida mediocre. Epstein se percibió como un creador, un artesano, un demiurgo del nuevo orden. “Quien quiere imitar al ángel”, decía Blas Pascal, “termina por hacer de bestia”.
Sin duda en emulación de Newton, Epstein manda atar a una adolescente para quemarla con lupas y prismas que concentran la luz solar. ¿Esa persona demasiado joven para ser aún una mujer plena terminará en algún hoyo del campo de golf o será enterrada en el rancho que el propio Epstein tenía en Nuevo México? “Si hablas, te mataré y mataré a tus padres”. A veces lo hicieron. Hubo suicidios inexplicables, sospechosas caídas de balcones, desapariciones hasta en México, incluido asesinatos de agentes norteamericanos del FBI. Al menos no los violaron, solo los mataron y tampoco se los comieron. Lucky guys.
Todo para decir que los mayores referentes de las clases dominantes en Occidente adoptan conductas que los distingan de los demás, incluso de los propios menos afortunados. Tener off-shores es apenas el carné de socio de los que detestan al Bien Público. Aparecer como “exiliado fiscal” equipara la represión de otros años para otorgar lustre a la evasión impositiva, considerada como un acto heroico. Explotar hasta lo indecible a las poblaciones que regentean en particular a través de las tarifas de servicios públicos o de la salud, siempre privadas, o incluso en ejercicio de la especulación financiera es compensada con actitudes filantrópicas, donaciones, actos de caridad.
Pero todo eso, ya de por sí criminal, es poca cosa comparado con el producto que ofrece Jeffrey Epstein. Es todo lo demás, y además la divina opción del goce oscuro de violar, torturar, matar a menores de edad y no tener que pagar las consecuencias de los actos. ¿Qué es violar una norma fiscal comparado a estrangular a una nena, a un nene? ¿Qué da más poder? ¿Ser una rata o ser una rata que se cree dios? Sobre las menores esclavizadas, Epstein sostenía que “algunas son como camarones, les sacas la cabeza y te quedas con el cuerpo”.
Comprar ese producto es excelso, por eso es caro. Pocos lo pueden, pocos lo tienen. Mi mano llega hasta la impunidad, que es la inmortalidad que tengo a mano. Y en un ambiente mundial siempre cambiante permite crear lazos eternos con otros semejantes, unidos por la sangre de las y los inocentes que derramaron juntos. Es exclusivo. No los unen convicciones ni argumentos, sino los crímenes, cuanto más aberrantes más solida es la hermandad de los asesinos. Tomar vidas ajenas es la potencia de Occidente.
Por supuesto que la lectura de las “Epstein files”, por más fragmentas, diversas y recortadas que estén, evoca a Hanna Arendt y provoca el mismo espanto que el “Nunca más”. En ambos casos relevamos un comportamiento predatorio de las elites dominantes, que utilizan todos los medios posibles para saciar el ansia de poder hasta lo indecible. Pero si en el “Nunca Más” vemos el accionar criminal de un estado en manos de usurpadores, nacidos de un golpe cívico-militar, en el caso Epstein constatamos que el terror es ejercido por el propio mercado, ya sin intermediarios, sobre el conjunto del cuerpo social como sobre la humanidad de las víctimas.
Como si fuera alguna nena, cualquier nene. Algunos lo podrán considerar una muestra de la decadencia del imperio, otros dirán que son las formas de dominación que se vienen. En todos los casos, tengamos en claro que no es la crueldad de un individuo ni de sus cómplices, sino el comportamiento depredador y destructivo de un sector social que predomina en el “Mundo Libre”. Cuando sea hora de irse a dormir, tengamos cuidado en lo que soñamos, ya que tanto en la “smorfia” napolitana como en nuestra querida quiniela el diecisiete siempre es la disgrazia.

• What a few persons contend is that the "French problem" and the "German problem" are core (and chores) to what must be addressed (and is not).
Regarding both countries, restoration of elites in 1945 was a basis for continued extractivism and war.

"There is nothing to expect from restoration", Arendt concludes, since it is also the restoration of what led to the Second World War and the "German problem".

Point made and taken. I too have been guilty of using Arendt quotes (and using her name for gravitas) as simple axiomatic slogans.
“Arendt became a privileged citation for those not so much ignorant of as uninterested in her work, and who canonised her for a new age at the price of reducing her to utter conventionality. Referencing her gave many a think piece the patina of a famous name and pseudo-profundity. Her words opportunistically provided revulsion towards Trump with the imprimatur of a supposed philosopher of fascism, for those who were less willing to think about where he came from and how he was possible.”
But there's always the flip side. "If the shoe fits..."
She's stated so many important things that needed stating and with such clarity that why wouldn't one use those quotes? Moreover, I myself was almost certainly introduced to her work through a hastily made quote-gif...
“In their invocations of Arendt as a theorist for a new age of “post-truth,” her new fans missed that she argued that truth and politics have never mixed. On the contrary: politics is a realm of appearance, not one of correspondence with fact.”
Now this I think is taking it too far. Arendt had to try making sense — in the immediate aftermath of Holocaust no less — of a country with high culture that, through prevalent lying, manipulation and pervasive threat of violence (internal and external), turned into a deranged obeissant mass virtually overnight.
It's absolutely crucial to understand and recognize the intent and capacity of various actors for overthrowing representative government and the pillars supporting functioning civil society.
BUT... it is not fait accompli that "truth and politics have never mixed" or that politics is merely "a realm of appearance". To believe that is to give up and just meekly accept that sociopaths will be victorious over humanity.
Last I checked there were a number of well-functioning liberal democracies where truthfulness is essential and the darker impulses of human nature are, with reasonable degree of success, being kept in check. There are lessons to be learned and those lessons also contain hope that not all will inevitably be lost.
But now stop letting me waste your time and go read that insightful article. That'd be time well spent.

My view (supported by the work of Arendt, Paxton, Eco, MacDonald, and others) is that fascism is a behavioural mode, not an ideologial one, one that tends to be highly emotive, low-information, and reactionary. It probably emerges in times of high social and political stress.
Knowing that, and being aware of the risks and signs is valuable.
Yes, fascism wears ideological trappings, but those serve its behaviours and not the other way 'round. The specific ideologies claimed are fluid and flexible and inconsistent both internally and over time.

I've had a few recommendations to look at the work of Hayakawa. He was an english professor, university president, and senator (from California). A decidedly eclectic mix.
The quote above comes at the opening of this lecture. Highly recommended.
I'd come to the realisation of the significance of media and its role on society and politics a few years ago. I keep running into validation of that notion.
