Configuring a Comet CH-250 vertical. The antenna is 24 ft. tall and is mounted 25 ft. above a south-facing slope down to a salt-water harbor. It’s specified as all-band, and at the moment it delivers 1:1.3 or better SWR across all ham bands, as advertised. That’s probably at some cost in efficiency. The antenna does not require radials, and the reviews confirm that radials do not change performance.
So, what’s my problem? Over the couple of years since I installed it, I have had difficulty making QSOs, even on 10M, where the system should be most efficient. Received signals look weak to me.
When I installed it, I reflexively put a 6-turn choke balun at the feed point. It has since been pointed out to me that the antenna may want to see a length of straight coax as some kind of counterpoise. So tomorrow a friend is going to help me remove the choke balun, and we’ll see what happens. Report will follow.

Das Auto wurde ausgeladen, die Lötstationen wurden aufgeräumt und wir müssen uns eingestehen: die HAM-Radio ist tatsächlich vorbei.
