  1. We all need to be having this conversation:

    After an Art Controversy, Hamline Faculty Urge Their President to Resign

    Many professors said the mishandling of an incident where an adjunct displayed an image of the Prophet Muhammad is dividing the community.

  3. U of Minnesota Art History department has issued a thoughtful statement about Islamic art and the value of academic freedom and free inquiry in tension with cultural sensitivity necessary to teach in multicultural classrooms. Really excellent. #Macademia, #AcademicFreedom #Prater #Hamline #ArtHistory #IslamicArt

  4. RT @soashworth

    "This [#Hamline president's] statement is horrible in too many ways to count. Let me just highlight the paragraph making clear why the increase in adjunct teaching staff is a core academic freedom problem."

  5. If you're a college president, and you're going to publicly claim you *didn't* actually fire an adjunct instructor for using controversial material legitimately and appropriately ...

    ... maybe don't also include 500 words in that letter about how you have to "make hard decisions that serve the interests of the entire campus community" ?

    Either you made the "hard decision" or you didn't. You can't have it both ways.

  6. Stunningly good piece by Kenan Malik (@kenanmalik) on the #Hamline University #blasphemy nonsense, which defends the rights of the vast majority of students who didn't complain (you know, those in a class on Islamic Art who wanted to see the Islamic art) theguardian.com/commentisfree/

  7. Thoughtful take by Carleton Associate Professor Amna Khalid on the #leadership disaster that is Fayneese Miller at my alma mater #Hamline University, who fired an #art #history professor for showing a piece of historic islamic art in a class about religious historic art.

  8. This is not a story about Islamophobia or trigger warnings or what material is appropriate to show in an art class. It’s a story about how expendable adjunct professors are, and how non-faculty deans who have no commitment to academic freedom have gained too much power in colleges and universities.

  9. One comment on this #Hamline academic freedom case, speaking as someone who was active in Students for Justice in #Palestine (#SJP):

    No one needs #AcademicFreedom protections to be really robust more than Muslim faculty do.

  10. CW: Politics—Hamline controversy

    @seanmcarroll

    Kenan Malik in the Observer (@kenanmalik if I’ve linked correctly): “For too many liberals, opposing bigotry means accepting reactionary ideas as authentically Muslim”

  11. Jaylani Hussein, the executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations... "If somebody wants to teach some controversial stuff about Islam, go teach it at the local library." nytimes.com/2023/01/08/us/haml
    Right, why teach in college?
