  19. But enough about the scholarship of diverse viewpoints of Islam, the beautiful artwork and symbolism, the geography of Muslim areas, and geopolitical/hegemonic forces and focus on the institution.

The institution fired the poorly paid worker, the institution is privileging the "authentic" view of Islam, and the institution is using "diversity" and further neoliberal views.

In short, #Hamline didn't want to look at the dumpster fire of it's own making and decided to shoot the most vulnerable person.

  20. I have a lot of thoughts about the #Hamline incident last semester and the subsequent outrage since then.

My thoughts are not new but I wanted to collect all the things I've read for posterity.

But honestly, this is probably the best summation of it all: religionnews.com/2023/01/12/th

    And this thread: threadreaderapp.com/thread/161

"In this context, the showing of the image is genuinely felt as an attack on the entire Muslim community, the “body” of the umma, as it is understood in this local context. It actually hurts, whether supporters of free speech wish to acknowledge that or not."

  21. Nobody asked my opinion on the #Hamline issue, but unless facts have been misreported in what I've read, I'm 100% behind the instructor, Erika López Prater. She provided more than adequate warning that she was presenting material that might be uncomfortable or offensive to some, and provided more than adequate opportunity for those students to avoid it.

It sounds like she already has another gig lined up, so it will be a case of "getting let go being the best thing that could have happened."

"This [#Hamline president's] statement is horrible in too many ways to count. Let me just highlight the paragraph making clear why the increase in adjunct teaching staff is a core academic freedom problem."
