  1. “Whether you believe that you can change the future or not, you are certain to be correct.” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/against-se

  2. "And I am only using the strictest definition of this dynamic here. In reality, it should be expanded to include all essays about What the Left Should Do by corporate Democratic officials, mewling centrists, 'common sense' Democratic operatives who now write for the Free Press, and so on. In all of these cases, people who fundamentally disagree with your goals are allegedly giving you good faith tips on what you should be doing."

  4. Hey Labour (any of them);

"If you, a citizen who does not spend an unhealthy amount of time reading political punditry, have ever made the mistake at nodding sagely at one of these columns and filing their advice in the serious side of your mind, I now give you a gift: the gift of never having to do that again. Taking advice from people who do not share your goals is and will always be a trick, and a waste of time. Stop it!"

  6. Republicans will smear it; Centrist Democrats will fear it. The people will vote for it. Hamilton Nolan:

"Health care for all. Higher wages for all. Good public services that help working people. Tax the rich bastards and make them pay their fair share. Support unions. Fuck your asshole boss. This platform transcends red and blue. As in many things, the labor movement is the path out of our dilemma. Let’s get cracking."

  8. “The one thing that you should not be able to say about my work is that I am not telling you what I really think. That is the price of entry to the worthwhile part of the Ideas industry. We may be bastards, but we are not bullshitting you.” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/ideas-that ht @AliceMarshall

  9. “it turns out that a statistical aggregate economic gain does not produce an increase in real world human well being if all of that statistical gain is captured by a single, tiny powerful interest group.” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/an-interna

  10. “(You may notice that straightforward ideas like ‘fire everyone in Democratic Party leadership positions automatically after a national election loss’ do not appear to be on the table.)” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/so-what-do ht @costrike

  11. Tax cuts “are the political equivalent of someone chopping your house to pieces with an axe and then offering the remains back to you under a sign that says, ‘Free Firewood!’” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/why-republ

  12. "[D]ivide most politicians into two broad categories: Enemies, and Cowards. [E]nemies are…opposed to your policy goals. [C]owards…agree with your…goals, but will sell you out…to protect their own interests. Embrace the idea that we are…pushing to elect…cowards, rather than…enemies. [T]he…work …is not to identify idealized superheroes to run for office [but] to create the conditions…that make it safe for the cowards to vote the right way." #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/how-to-thi ht @ryanlcooper

  13. “Predicting the future is almost impossible, but one of the few predictions that I feel very confident in is that, a century or so down the road, people will look at modern car-centric America with the same disgust that we feel when we hear about old timey cities without modern sewage systems, where everyone just dumped their chamber pots in the street.” #HamiltonNolan hamiltonnolan.com/p/cars-have-

    by #HamiltonNolan:

Now, let me make a prediction … if #Trump and #Vance win. Corporations…will perceive that the #Republican anti-corporate push is rooted not in a genuine distaste for corporate economic power but rather in a distaste for the trappings of #progressivism… They will retire the #prideFlags, stop putting #trans people in ads, stop putting out #BlackLivesMatter statements, stop touting #DEI, and will tell their ad agencies to put more American flags in their ads.

    by #HamiltonNolan:

    2. Culture wars — If you are genuinely concerned that big corporations have too much power and workers have too little, restricting corporate power is its own goal… #Republicans are still the party of business. They do not want to restrict corporate power in order to empower the working class. Instead, they take their culture war issues— #gayRights, #transRights, #DEI aka #racism, and other #rightWing / #religious obsessions—and apply them to corporations.

    by #HamiltonNolan:

    1. Anti-Immigration — Instead of saying “companies are stepping on workers’ necks,” they say instead, “ #immigrants are taking money out of workers’ pockets.” Notice that any conversation on this topic by the right wing shifts almost immediately into a rant against #immigration. It never goes from “we want to help workers” to “we want to build unions.” It always goes from “we want to help workers” to “immigrants are the problem”

  17. @interfluidity @andrewducker

#HamiltonNolan it feels like something that could actually work.
Of course, there will be lots of cries against that.
And actually, who is against would be a good heuristic to spot on the ones who want to be in an inner group that protects them and compels the other, allowing them to profit from the commons without contributing to it.

And we will also need to find ways for all spectrums of minorities to not be crunched by the mass (an other, already existing problem, just perhaps exacerbated with more rich people)

    Edit: typos

  21. “Capitalism is like nuclear power. It is a mighty force capable of producing great energy that can be harnessed for human progress—but if you don’t keep it tightly controlled, it will poison everything.” #HamiltonNolan defector.com/unions-can-fix-wh ht @BlogWood

The Real #Immigration Problem Is #Capital, Not #Labor
Human immigrants are the same as you. #Multinational #corporations are not.

..."Championing the free flow of capital while calling for harsh restrictions on the free flow of labor—which is the baseline position of both the Republican and Democratic parties, who vary only in degree on this issue—is bad for most people. It is a pro-inequality combination. Period. Doi"...

Now, with the UAW on strike against the monopolistic auto-makers - who received billions in public funds, gave their top execs massive raises, shipped jobs offshore, and used public money to lobby against transit and decarbonization - Biden is sitting on the sidelines, failing to champion the workers' cause.

Writing in his newsletter, labor reporter #HamiltonNolan makes the case that the White House should - *must!* - stand behind the autoworkers:

But you don't have to look back to the stocking frame to find this kind of solidarity. As #HamiltonNolan writes in his newsletter, "Hollywood is the single best example of mature labor power in America":

The entire Hollywood workforce, from grips to carpenters, costumers to plumbers, teamsters to medics, is unionized. That includes writers and actors (I'm a member of #IATSE Local 839, AKA #TheAnimationGuild).
