"Berlin immigration authorities issued the orders on 31 March, demanding that the four individuals leave Germany within one month or else face deportation. No Other Land: boycot en meer geweld

De mishandeling en ontvoering van Hamdan Ballal, co-regisseur van de film No Other Land, zet de Oscar-winnaar weer in de schijnwerpers.

Het incident laat niet alleen het gewelddadige onrecht op de Westelijke Jordaanoever opnieuw zien, maar ook de ongelijkheid tussen de Palestijnse en Israëlische makers van de film. De discussie daarover kwam al op gang nadat de film in 2024 in première ging, maar is intenser nadat hij een Oscar won. De BDS-beweging heeft de film op de boycot-lijst gezet.

Mishandeling en ontvoering

Vorige week maandag kwam het nieuws naar buiten dat Hamdan Ballal in elkaar was geslagen door Israëlische kolonisten, en daarna gewond uit een ambulance werd ontvoerd door het Israëlische leger. De eerste die het bekend maakte, via zijn X-account, was Yuval Abraham, de Israëlische co-regisseur van No Other Land. Een dag later werd hij weer vrijgelaten.

In een interview met The Guardian na zijn vrijlating een dag later, zei Ballal dat de soldaten vanaf het begin bij het incident betrokken waren, en dat ze hem met de dood bedreigden. Hij had zich, na de Iftar-maaltijd, naar zijn dorp gehaast omdat hij hoorde dat gewapende kolonisten er binnen waren gegaan. Dat gebeurde in de regio Masafer Yatta, waar No Other Land zich ook afspeelt.

Nadat Ballal als fotograaf foto’s had gemaakt, escaleerde de situatie. Hij rende naar zijn huis om zijn vrouw te waarschuwen de kinderen binnen te houden, en werd vervolgens aangevallen. ‘Ze gooiden me op de grond en een kolonist begon me op het hoofd te slaan. De soldaat begon ook te slaan, met de achterkant van zijn geweer op mijn hoofd. Daarna schoot hij in de lucht. Ik versta geen Hebreeuws, maar begreep wel dat hij zei dat hij me met zijn volgende schot zou doden. Ik dacht dat ik het niet zou overleven.’

Hij en twee andere Palestijnen werden gewond, geboeid en geblinddoekt afgevoerd. Ook tijdens zijn detentie werd Ballal mishandeld. Ballal tegen The Guardian: ‘Het was wraak vanwege onze film. Ik hoorde de stemmen van de soldaten, ze lachten me uit, ik hoorde het woord “Oscar”.’

Ontspoord geweld

Het is precies het volledig ontspoorde geweld van kolonisten en soldaten tegen Palestijnen dat No Other Land zo onverbloemd laat zien. De film heeft vier regisseurs: behalve Hamdan Ballal ook de Palestijnse filmmaker Basel Adra, en de Israëlische Rachel Szor en Yuval Abraham. De film gaat over het kolonisten- en legergeweld tegen de Palestijnen van Masafer Yatta op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever. De oorspronkelijke bewoners worden van hun land beroofd, niet alleen door geweld en de vernietiging van huizen, maar ook omdat steeds meer land zomaar militair terrein wordt verklaard, waar burgers niet mogen komen.

Basel Adra en zijn gemeenschap spelen de hoofdrol in No Other Land. De film draait ook om Adra’s samenwerking en ontwikkelende vriendschap met Yuval Abraham. Abraham is een Israëlische journalist die nadrukkelijk aan de kant van de Palestijnen staat. Hij wil het verhaal van de gemeenschappen van Masafer Yatta naar de mensen in zijn gemeenschap brengen.

De film gaat de ongelijkheid tussen de twee mannen niet uit de weg. Er zijn scenes waarin de Palestijnen aan Abraham laten weten dat het toch echt zíjn mensen zijn die hen van hun land en hun rechten berooft, dat zíjn land Palestina bezet. Dat híj weer naar zijn veilige huis kan, terwijl zíj in hun dorpen vechten voor hun land en leven. Ook Yuval en Adra bespreken hun verschillende posities, bijvoorbeeld als ze in de auto zitten en Abraham gefrustreerd is dat zijn stukken in de krant maar weinig ruimte krijgen en niet genoeg teweeg brengen. Adra’s problemen zijn een stuk groter dan dat, hij verwijt Abraham vriendschappelijk en tussen de regels door naïviteit.

De film draait inmiddels 11 weken in Nederlandse bioscopen, sinds 9 januari. Vorig jaar al won No Other Land de Berlinale Documentaireprijs én, op hetzelfde filmfestival, de Panorama Publieksprijs voor Beste Documentaire. Tijdens het IDFA afgelopen najaar won de film de publieksprijs. En als climax was daar de Academy Award voor Beste Documentaire Film, op 2 maart.

De Academy Award gaf de film vleugels. Zelfs in de VS, waar nog altijd geen grote distributeur bereid is de film naar de bioscopen te brengen, doet hij het relatief goed: volgens de New York Times staat No Other Land deze maand al drie weken in de nationale Top 25. Hij heeft inmiddels de grens van twee miljoen dollar opbrengst overschreden. En dat terwijl hij maar in 130 filmtheaters te zien is – mainstream films zijn doorgaans in duizenden bioscopen te zien.

Maar de Academy Award stuwde ook de kritiek op de film weer op. Die gaat niet alleen over ongelijkheid, maar ook over de productie achter de film. Er werd samengewerkt met Close-Up, een organisatie die volgens de BDS-beweging de Israelische bezetting actief normaliseert en daarom door veel filmmakers al wordt geboycot. Normalisatie wordt gezien als het meedoen met projecten waarin Palestijnen en Israëli’s samenwerken, waarbij de Israëlische kant niet publiekelijk de rechten van de Palestijnen erkent, en er geen gezamenlijk verzet is tegen de Israëlische bezetting, vestigingskolonialisme en apartheid.

De BDS-beweging schreef in een verklaring vlak na de Oscaruitreiking dat ze No Other Land vanaf het begin hebben geboycot. Niet publiekelijk, want ze kunnen niet elke project dat Israël normaliseert aandacht geven – het zijn er simpelweg te veel – maar wel als bijvoorbeeld filmfestivals of filmmakers ernaar informeerden. Volgens de beweging hebben verschillende Israëlische medewerkers aan de film niet alleen ontkend dat Israël genocide pleegt, maar zelfs ‘extreem schadelijke en immorele statements’ gemaakt. Daarbij werd een ‘valse gelijkwaardigheid geschapen tussen de kolonisator en de gekoloniseerde’, zegt de BDS-beweging, ‘die wordt gebruikt om Israëls genocide te rationaliseren.’

Scherpe randjes

Maar er is meer. Hoe kon het dat juist déze Palestijnse film zo’n belangrijke prijs kon winnen? Het antwoord luidde: omdat het geen Palestijnse film is, maar een Israëlisch-Palestijnse film. Het is juist die combinatie die zo’n film behapbaar maakt voor het grotere publiek. En die de scherpe randjes van de speeches af haalden, werd her en der geoordeeld. Het platform Mondoweiss concludeerde dat ‘liberaal Zionisme’ de show had gestolen tijdens de Oscar-uitreikingen. Abraham’s speech, schreef Mondoweiss, ‘stelde de behoeftes van de Israëliërs centraal ten koste van Palestijnse vrijheid’, en was ‘ondermijnend voor het verzet van de Palestijnen in de film’.

De Palestijnse activist en schrijver Mohammed El-Kurd zet die dynamiek in een breder perspectief in zijn onlangs verschenen boek Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal. Hij vraagt zich af wie er voor de Palestijnen spreekt, wie dat recht nog heeft na decennia van demonisering, delegitimering en racisme. ‘Wie kan er ontsnappen aan het terrorisme-genre?’, vraagt hij zich af.

Hij gaat in op het genre films waarin Palestijnen en Israëliërs samenwerken. ‘De Palestijnse filmmaker’, schrijft El-Kurd, ‘wordt naar het filmfestival begeleid en mag het podium op als de charismatische side-kick van zijn gezaghebbende mede-filmmaker. (…) Het belangrijkste aan de film is niet de inhoud maar het feit] dat die door co-regisseurs is gemaakt, een modus die de wellustige aandrang van het publiek bevredigt.’

El-Kurd schrijft niet specifiek over No Other Land, maar zijn typering, waarin bijvoorbeeld ook de promotie van de film wordt meegenomen en waarin het vooral om de samenwerking tussen ‘de slachter’ en ‘de geslachte’ gaat, is raak. Zo wordt immers ook No Other Land in de markt gezet, met een poster waarin de Basel Adra en Yuval Abraham als gelijken tegenover elkaar staan.

Groot podium

Ja, Abraham stelt in speech bij de Oscaruitreiking de ongelijkheid tussen hem en Adra aan de kaak. Hij zegt: ‘We leven onder een regime waarin ik vrij ben onder civiel recht en Basels leven onder militair recht kapot gemaakt en hij geen controle over zijn leven heeft.’ Maar dan, als hij het buitenlandbeleid van de VS bekritiseert: ‘Zien jullie niet dat we onderling verbonden zijn? Dat mijn mensen alleen echt veilig kunnen zijn als Basels mensen vrij en veilig zijn?’

Maar: het Palestijnse land is en wordt gestolen, en dáár gaat zo’n statement aan voorbij. Ook de genocide wordt niet genoemd, terwijl dat op zo’n groot podium verschil zou maken.

Nadat No Other Land de Academy Award won, heeft de BDS-beweging de boycot van de film publiek gemaakt. De decennialange ontmenselijking van Palestijnen, Arabieren, moslims, zwarte mensen en inheemse volkeren door Hollywood wordt genoemd: die is op zichzelf al immoreel, maar maakt nu ook Israëls genocide mogelijk. Het groeiende profiel van de film, zéker sinds die een Oscar won, grijpt de beweging nu aan om de aandacht te vestigen op normalisatie en het gevaar ervan. ‘Het doel’, schrijft de beweging, ‘mag de onethische middelen niet heiligen.’

Co-regisseur Hamdan Ballal is inmiddels weer thuis, en herstellende.

No Other Land: boycot en meer geweld

De mishandeling en ontvoering van Hamdan Ballal, co-regisseur van de film No Other Land, zet de Oscar-winnaar weer in de schijnwerpers.

Het incident laat niet alleen het gewelddadige onrecht op de Westelijke Jordaanoever opnieuw zien, maar ook de ongelijkheid tussen de Palestijnse en Israëlische makers van de film. De discussie daarover kwam al op gang nadat de film in 2024 in première ging, maar is intenser nadat hij een Oscar won. De BDS-beweging heeft de film op de boycot-lijst gezet.

Mishandeling en ontvoering

Vorige week maandag kwam het nieuws naar buiten dat Hamdan Ballal in elkaar was geslagen door Israëlische kolonisten, en daarna gewond uit een ambulance werd ontvoerd door het Israëlische leger. De eerste die het bekend maakte, via zijn X-account, was Yuval Abraham, de Israëlische co-regisseur van No Other Land. Een dag later werd hij weer vrijgelaten.

In een interview met The Guardian na zijn vrijlating een dag later, zei Ballal dat de soldaten vanaf het begin bij het incident betrokken waren, en dat ze hem met de dood bedreigden. Hij had zich, na de Iftar-maaltijd, naar zijn dorp gehaast omdat hij hoorde dat gewapende kolonisten er binnen waren gegaan. Dat gebeurde in de regio Masafer Yatta, waar No Other Land zich ook afspeelt.

Nadat Ballal als fotograaf foto’s had gemaakt, escaleerde de situatie. Hij rende naar zijn huis om zijn vrouw te waarschuwen de kinderen binnen te houden, en werd vervolgens aangevallen. ‘Ze gooiden me op de grond en een kolonist begon me op het hoofd te slaan. De soldaat begon ook te slaan, met de achterkant van zijn geweer op mijn hoofd. Daarna schoot hij in de lucht. Ik versta geen Hebreeuws, maar begreep wel dat hij zei dat hij me met zijn volgende schot zou doden. Ik dacht dat ik het niet zou overleven.’

Hij en twee andere Palestijnen werden gewond, geboeid en geblinddoekt afgevoerd. Ook tijdens zijn detentie werd Ballal mishandeld. Ballal tegen The Guardian: ‘Het was wraak vanwege onze film. Ik hoorde de stemmen van de soldaten, ze lachten me uit, ik hoorde het woord “Oscar”.’

Ontspoord geweld

Het is precies het volledig ontspoorde geweld van kolonisten en soldaten tegen Palestijnen dat No Other Land zo onverbloemd laat zien. De film heeft vier regisseurs: behalve Hamdan Ballal ook de Palestijnse filmmaker Basel Adra, en de Israëlische Rachel Szor en Yuval Abraham. De film gaat over het kolonisten- en legergeweld tegen de Palestijnen van Masafer Yatta op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever. De oorspronkelijke bewoners worden van hun land beroofd, niet alleen door geweld en de vernietiging van huizen, maar ook omdat steeds meer land zomaar militair terrein wordt verklaard, waar burgers niet mogen komen.

Basel Adra en zijn gemeenschap spelen de hoofdrol in No Other Land. De film draait ook om Adra’s samenwerking en ontwikkelende vriendschap met Yuval Abraham. Abraham is een Israëlische journalist die nadrukkelijk aan de kant van de Palestijnen staat. Hij wil het verhaal van de gemeenschappen van Masafer Yatta naar de mensen in zijn gemeenschap brengen.

De film gaat de ongelijkheid tussen de twee mannen niet uit de weg. Er zijn scenes waarin de Palestijnen aan Abraham laten weten dat het toch echt zíjn mensen zijn die hen van hun land en hun rechten berooft, dat zíjn land Palestina bezet. Dat híj weer naar zijn veilige huis kan, terwijl zíj in hun dorpen vechten voor hun land en leven. Ook Yuval en Adra bespreken hun verschillende posities, bijvoorbeeld als ze in de auto zitten en Abraham gefrustreerd is dat zijn stukken in de krant maar weinig ruimte krijgen en niet genoeg teweeg brengen. Adra’s problemen zijn een stuk groter dan dat, hij verwijt Abraham vriendschappelijk en tussen de regels door naïviteit.

De film draait inmiddels 11 weken in Nederlandse bioscopen, sinds 9 januari. Vorig jaar al won No Other Land de Berlinale Documentaireprijs én, op hetzelfde filmfestival, de Panorama Publieksprijs voor Beste Documentaire. Tijdens het IDFA afgelopen najaar won de film de publieksprijs. En als climax was daar de Academy Award voor Beste Documentaire Film, op 2 maart.

De Academy Award gaf de film vleugels. Zelfs in de VS, waar nog altijd geen grote distributeur bereid is de film naar de bioscopen te brengen, doet hij het relatief goed: volgens de New York Times staat No Other Land deze maand al drie weken in de nationale Top 25. Hij heeft inmiddels de grens van twee miljoen dollar opbrengst overschreden. En dat terwijl hij maar in 130 filmtheaters te zien is – mainstream films zijn doorgaans in duizenden bioscopen te zien.

Maar de Academy Award stuwde ook de kritiek op de film weer op. Die gaat niet alleen over ongelijkheid, maar ook over de productie achter de film. Er werd samengewerkt met Close-Up, een organisatie die volgens de BDS-beweging de Israelische bezetting actief normaliseert en daarom door veel filmmakers al wordt geboycot. Normalisatie wordt gezien als het meedoen met projecten waarin Palestijnen en Israëli’s samenwerken, waarbij de Israëlische kant niet publiekelijk de rechten van de Palestijnen erkent, en er geen gezamenlijk verzet is tegen de Israëlische bezetting, vestigingskolonialisme en apartheid.

De BDS-beweging schreef in een verklaring vlak na de Oscaruitreiking dat ze No Other Land vanaf het begin hebben geboycot. Niet publiekelijk, want ze kunnen niet elke project dat Israël normaliseert aandacht geven – het zijn er simpelweg te veel – maar wel als bijvoorbeeld filmfestivals of filmmakers ernaar informeerden. Volgens de beweging hebben verschillende Israëlische medewerkers aan de film niet alleen ontkend dat Israël genocide pleegt, maar zelfs ‘extreem schadelijke en immorele statements’ gemaakt. Daarbij werd een ‘valse gelijkwaardigheid geschapen tussen de kolonisator en de gekoloniseerde’, zegt de BDS-beweging, ‘die wordt gebruikt om Israëls genocide te rationaliseren.’

Scherpe randjes

Maar er is meer. Hoe kon het dat juist déze Palestijnse film zo’n belangrijke prijs kon winnen? Het antwoord luidde: omdat het geen Palestijnse film is, maar een Israëlisch-Palestijnse film. Het is juist die combinatie die zo’n film behapbaar maakt voor het grotere publiek. En die de scherpe randjes van de speeches af haalden, werd her en der geoordeeld. Het platform Mondoweiss concludeerde dat ‘liberaal Zionisme’ de show had gestolen tijdens de Oscar-uitreikingen. Abraham’s speech, schreef Mondoweiss, ‘stelde de behoeftes van de Israëliërs centraal ten koste van Palestijnse vrijheid’, en was ‘ondermijnend voor het verzet van de Palestijnen in de film’.
