oggi, 4 settembre, a roma (piazza vittorio): proiezione di “no other land” / in memoria di awdah hathaleen
NO OTHER LAND
Giovedì 4 settembre proiezione speciale all’Arena

#Germany seeks to #deport #protesters
Submitted by webadmin on 9 April, 2025
"The German state has issued deportation orders for three #EUCitizens and one #American who have attended #ProPalestinian protests.
"Berlin immigration authorities issued the orders on 31 March, demanding that the four individuals leave Germany within one month or else face deportation. Their orders cite a protest in October 2024 in which masked individuals caused 'significant property damage, including #graffiti', as well as resisting arrest and calling a #police officer a '#fascist'.
"Unusually, three of the four orders also invoke the German principle of #Staatsräson, (“#StateReason”). This term originates from a speech #AngelaMerkel gave to the #IsraeliKnesset in 2008, asserting that #Israeli security was fundamental to the purpose of the German state.
"Staatsräson is not an officially defined term or codified anywhere in the German constitution or by German courts. At least two of the protestors are appealing the decision, with their lawyer telling Al-Monitor that it is a 'political concept, not a legal concept, and therefore unlawful'.
"In any case, the #deportation of #activists for #protesting should be opposed.
"The activists’ lawyer has drawn parallels to the case of #MahmoudKhalil in the US. 'I see similarities… It is weaponization of #ImmigrationLaw as a tool to silence #PoliticalDissent'. Khalil’s case may also lead to a debate on interpretations of the US constitution’s #FirstAmendment.
"Back in February, #Berlin police broke up a protest, citing a ban on '#ArabicChanting', the playing of #ArabicMusic, or giving a speech in #Arabic. In October 2024, police raided the homes of five men, four of whom were being investigated over 'authorship of #antisemitic social media posts'.
Clapping
"And after the joint Israeli-Palestinian documentary #NoOtherLand won an Academy Award, German culture minister Claudia Roth insisted that she was only clapping for Israeli director Yuval Abraham, not Palestinian director #BaselAdra. Several politicians, including the mayor of Berlin, called for her resignation. A torrent of public criticism was aimed at #YuvalAbraham for his acceptance speech, to which he responded: 'To stand on German soil as the son of Holocaust survivors and call for a ceasefire — and to then be labelled as antisemitic is not only outrageous, it is also literally putting Jewish lives in danger.'
"Israeli politicians cited German politicians when attacking the filmmakers themselves, and only weeks later, co-director #HamdanBallal was attacked by #IsraeliSettlers in the #WestBank, and removed from an ambulance by #IDF soldiers.
"German Staatsräson is less about assuring Israel’s right to exist, and more about giving a free hand to the #repressive policies of the Israeli right."

Must a Palestinian have an Oscar for the world to care when he’s attacked? (Sleman Altehe | +972 Magazine, 2025-03-25)
https://www.972mag.com/hamdan-ballal-attack-arrest-oscar/
------"When news broke of the settler ambush [on the Palestinian village of Susiya], the headlines focused almost exclusively on one thing: [Hamdan] Ballal’s Oscar win."
"... the emphasis was clear: the assault and detention of a Palestinian is notable because he holds international acclaim."
"Why must a Palestinian’s intellectual recognition be the basis for solidarity? Why does the global media insist on highlighting that Ballal is an Oscar-winning filmmaker?
"This kind of solidarity, grounded in fame or intellectual achievement, dangerously aligns with colonial patterns of recognition. It reproduces the logic that some lives — those legible to Western audiences — are more grievable, more shocking to violate, and more worthy of defense."

It Took an Oscar: How German Media Discovered Settler Violence (The Third Draft - Hanno Hauenstein, 2025-03-29)
https://open.substack.com/pub/hannohauenstein/p/it-took-an-oscar-how-german-media
———“The settler attack on No Other Land co-director Hamdan Ballal rightly sparked outrage. Even Axel Springer’s outlets are covering the West Bank. What’s behind this sudden empathy for a Palestinian?”
“No Other Land recently won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, after receiving an award at the Berlinale last year – followed by a disturbing campaign led by Germany’s right-wing tabloid media, Berlin’s mayor, and the country’s justice and culture ministers, …”
“In much of #Germany’s media coverage this week, the Oscar was the hook: an award-winning filmmaker, attacked by settlers. The headline wrote itself. Unlike so many victims of state-backed Israeli violence – especially in Gaza – Hamdan Ballal was named, quoted, made visible. For once, newsrooms simply spelled out the facts.”

Backlash to Academy Awards response over No Man’s Land co-director’s ‘lynching’ grows; board meets.
Over 600 members of the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Science have condemned the body’s response to the attack by West Bank settlers on the Hamdan Ballal, co-director of this year’s Best Documentary Oscar winner, No Man’s Land. Ballal reported that the settlers in the West Bank referenced the Oscar during the attack, which his Israeli co-director Yuval Abraham described as a ‘lynching’. The letter, signed by stars including Natasha Lyonne, Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, Riz Ahmed, John Cusack, Joaquin Phoenix, Ava DuVernay, Alfonso Cuarón, Penélope Cruz, Emma Thompson, Tony Kushner and Jonathan Glazer comes after the Academy belatedly condemned the attack in a statement that didn’t mention Ballal by name and referenced the Academy membership’s “many unique viewpoints”. In response to the members’ letter, the Academy’s board has called an extraordinary meeting to discuss a new response.

Update: AMPAS's governors have apologized for their initial statement over Israeli authorities' treatment of Palestinian Oscar winner Hamdan Ballal. “On Wednesday, we sent a letter in response to reports of violence against Oscar winner Hamdan Ballal, co-director of No Other Land, connected to his artistic expression,” CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang wrote to members today. “We regret that we failed to directly acknowledge Mr. Ballal and the film by name.” They continued: “We sincerely apologize to Mr. Ballal and all artists who felt unsupported by our previous statement and want to make it clear that the Academy condemns violence of this kind anywhere in the world. We abhor the suppression of free speech under any circumstances.” @Deadline has more details and context to share,

The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS, the organization that gives out the Oscars) have met today to discuss their "belated and tepid" response to the beating and detention of Oscar-winning Palestinian documentarian Hamdan Ballal. Leading members of the Academy including Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, Emma Thompson, Ava DuVernay and Adam McKay signed a letter demanding a more forceful response to Ballal's treatment by Israeli authorities, saying the original statement "fell far short of the sentiments this moment calls for."
