40 years ago tonight the #Giotto spacecraft passed the nucleus of #comet #Halley at great speed: the documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI-W8ss4x5I from back then - also at https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Videos/Undated/Giotto_-_English with bonus material - tells the story well. A big special issue of the ESA Bulletin about the mission is at https://esamultimedia.esa.int/multimedia/publications/ESA-Bulletin-046/offline/download.pdf and other historical material like some photos is linked from https://historicalarchives.esa.int/giotto-cometary-encounters-and-archival-sources while a recording of the BBC's live coverage is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxDMdH4uzxI

Thanks @albertcardona for sharing this! I wasn’t aware of the #BayeuxTapestry at all, nor that #Halley’s #Comet played such a prominent role in #MedievalArt and perception. A fascinating story! https://mathstodon.xyz/@albertcardona/115992114758518351

Every now and then I see a movie that instantly triggers me to watch the rest of that director's movies. Sean Baker's The Florida Project is such a movie. It was on my watchlist for ages, what a movie!

O no

The Halley VIa Research Station operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is located on the Brunt Ice Shelf as shown in the map below. It used to sit on the A-81 iceberg area as seen in the map above and was moved to its current location in 2016 before A-81 broke loose.
BAS notes that this A-83 calving was expected, the ice shelf is stable and they don’t expect a response to this new event.

Recorded sightings of Halley’s Comet go back more than 2,000 years. One of the famous recordings is in the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the Norman invasion of England in 1066. The tapestry is displayed in a special museum in Bayeux, Normandie (France).

@markmccaughrean has a thought-provoking thread on why we should "build a new mission to Halley in the footsteps of ESA’s Giotto, Rosetta, & Comet Interceptor. To rendezvous with it, fly alongside, & return again in 2134."

This is rather special to me: #Comet #Halley is on its way back to earth!
My physics teacher was part of the team that calculated the trajectory of the #Giotto probe (that took colourful pictures of Halley in 1986). And I decided back then that I'd have a look at Halley again in 2061 🤞🤞

And the moment is here! This very minute #Halley's comet is farthest from the Sun, the distance from its center being 35.14346516525 a.u. Halley was most distant from the center of the Earth - 36.1162710156 a.u. - already on 29 July at 14:15 UTC, though; next July it'll be closer. And in 2061 the comet will be back near Sun and Earth: https://www.abramsplanetarium.org/Programs/CaseForCometHalley2061.pdf previews the viewing conditions for 40° Northern latitude. Zero magnitude expected but low in twilight when brightest.
