Mikrofon, który „widzi” dźwięk. Nowa technologia potrafi podsłuchiwać przez szybę

Naukowcy z Pekińskiego Instytutu Technologii (BIT) opracowali nowatorski „wizualny mikrofon”, który do rejestrowania dźwięku nie potrzebuje wibracji powietrza, lecz światła.

Urządzenie potrafi odtworzyć mowę lub muzykę, analizując mikroskopijne drgania powierzchni przedmiotów, takich jak kartka papieru czy liść rośliny doniczkowej. Co istotne, technologia ta działa nawet wtedy, gdy źródło dźwięku jest odizolowane, na przykład za dźwiękoszczelną szybą. Wystarczy że mikrofon „widzi” ruch.

Jak usłyszeć obraz?

Zasada działania opiera się na technice zwanej single-pixel imaging (obrazowanie jednopikselowe). W przeciwieństwie do wcześniejszych prób tworzenia wizualnych mikrofonów, które wymagały drogich i skomplikowanych kamer szybko-klatkowych lub laserów, chińskie rozwiązanie jest tańsze i prostsze.

Gdy fala dźwiękowa uderza w obiekt, powoduje jego subtelne drgania, niewidoczne gołym okiem. System opracowany przez chińskich naukowców oświetla taki obiekt, a pojedynczy detektor (zamiast matrycy milionów pikseli) zbiera informacje o zmianach w odbitym świetle. Następnie zaawansowane algorytmy komputerowe składają te dane w całość, rekonstruując dźwięk, który wywołał wibracje.

Od Bella do Beethovena

Idea przesyłania dźwięku za pomocą światła nie jest nowa – już w 1880 roku Alexander Graham Bell stworzył „fotofon”, który wykorzystywał promienie słoneczne do transmisji głosu, co sam wynalazca uważał za swoje największe osiągnięcie. Dzisiejsze rozwiązanie to jednak cyfrowa ewolucja tej koncepcji.

Podczas testów laboratoryjnych urządzenie z powodzeniem odtworzyło wypowiadane cyfry (zarówno po chińsku, jak i angielsku) oraz fragment utworu „Dla Elizy” Beethovena, odczytując wibracje z kartki papieru i liścia. Na obecnym etapie technologia działa skutecznie z odległości około pół metra, ale zespół pod kierownictwem Xu-Ri Yao pracuje nad zwiększeniem tego zasięgu.

Zastosowania: od szpiegostwa po medycynę

Potencjał tego rozwiązania wykracza daleko poza zwykłe nagrywanie. Ponieważ „wizualny mikrofon” nie jest wrażliwy na hałas otoczenia w tradycyjnym sensie i może działać przez bariery fizyczne (jak okna), może znaleźć zastosowanie w działaniach operacyjnych służb, monitoringu środowiskowym czy diagnostyce przemysłowej. Badacze sugerują również, że technologia ta może zostać zminiaturyzowana i wykorzystana do bezdotykowego monitorowania tętna i pracy serca, poprzez analizę mikrodrgań skóry.

Nam nieodmiennie wynalazek skojarzył się trochę złowrogo ze słynnym komputerem HAL 9000 z Odysei Kosmicznej 2001 Stanleya Kubricka. Być może niektórzy z was pamiętają jak HAL 9000 „podsłuchiwał” rozmowę astronautów.
