#AmReading THE BANISHED IMMORTAL: A LIFE OF LI BAI by #HaJin, who mentions Li Bai's calligraphy skills:

"The lettering is extraordinarily robust & beautiful & floating, displaying the writer's innate radiance. These characters show the work of a master calligrapher with a striking, unique style. Judging by the bold beauty of his calligraphy, Li Bai must have been spiritually free & physically strong."

Now conflating #LiBai with Wang Bo Zhao's character in the film ROMANCE OF THE CALLIGRAPHER.

The two friends in Osborne's novel met at Cambridge & bonded over the poetry of #LiBai, whose poem "The Exile's Letter", says the narrator, "was the greatest single poem about friendship ever written outside Homer."

I have my own fondly remembered but failed friendship forged through books. We met in a pub & bonded over the prose of Jane Bowles. But that was a lifetime ago..

Inspired to read more about Li Bai, am turning next to THE BANISHED IMMORTAL a biography of the poet by #HaJin.
