@reverend My first actual encounter with the John Waters movies was "Hairspray". Even today, it's my favorite Waters film.

I managed to see it only twice on its' original two-week run in Helsinki movie theaters, just before Christmas in 1988. As far as I can remember, it had received mediocre reviews in the Finnish newspapers, but I think I had seen a trailer somewhere, and had some idea of what to expect. I already knew most of the tunes that were featured on the soundtrack, and it turned out that I loved the movie as well.

I have a vague recollection that I had read an article about a previous Waters film, "Polyester", a few years earlier, so I may have been somewhat familiar with his reputation. But it was only later that I saw that film at the Finnish Film Archive, without the original Odorama effects, of course.

Although "Cry Baby" also had great music, it didn't quite have the same kind of impact on me. Perhaps I didn't find the storyline as compelling, or perhaps it was just the fact that Divine was no longer available to star in the film.
