While hiking an abandoned logging road, I tripped and sprained my wrist. Getting old is hard, and my balance isn't what it used to be. It's healing, but it aches after typing, which is much better than the first two days, when I thought I would have to have my daughter pack my camping gear. Some of my series may suffer, but that is better than living in pain or damaging my wrist.

  8. Is a disaster yet? — Sat & Sunday

Things did not improve. In the mid-afternoon, there were some rainbows, but no sun breaks. I finished reading something that had been on my TBR list for over a decade, “Moll Flanders,” by Defoe.

  11. Is a disaster yet? — Sat Morning

What a wild night: rain, sleet, hail (light), and snow. I woke up to a light coating of snow everywhere. This was the last morning I didn’t need to take shelter while I ate breakfast and had my tea.

  12. Friday Part III

That was the last of the “decent” weather, and the rain slowly turned to sleet and then to icy snow. The weather threatened to improve come evening, and I got a lovely sunset reflected in the east.

It lied, and the night was interesting. More on that tomorrow.

  13. Friday Part II

We moved to mixed clouds and periodic sprinkles. It was nice enough to go flower viewing before I had to retreat to the car to read "Experimental Film" by Gemma Files and "Turn of the Screw" by Henry James.

  14. Is it a disaster yet? — Friday Part 1

The new day started with mixed weather. On rolling out of a dry tent, I found fog mixed with light rain. Things looked hopeful.

  15. Thursday Part II

The new tent, now deceased (which we will get to at the very end), was best I’ve I’ve owned. It was easy for one person to set up, dry, and airy. I finished the first half of Yuru Camp #17 and fell asleep to the sound of the wind rumbling like a freight train.

  17. Is a disaster yet?

    Is a disaster yet?

The difference between a disaster and an adventure is if you recover.

    Thursday Part I

The trip started under mixed omens. The weather cleared, and the camp fees were waived. It’s always pretty isolated, but this early in the year, with a mixed weather forecast, it was a safe bet we (Roscoe Arbuckle [my dog] and I) would have the place to ourselves, and we did.

The view of Mt. Hood was spectacular on the way in. This was as good as it got.

Evening rolled in with mixed showers and sun. The chill was enough that I read mostly in the car with Roscoe. (A Stable of Nightmares, by Joseph Sheridan Fanu)

  19. Much ado, or: No exit

    A haibun

    spring window—
    my curtain lifts once
    then settles

The room is quiet, but the noise does not settle inside my head. Voices overlap; doubts, second-guessing, rehearsed replies, small concerns that return just when I begin to hope they have finished. They question, correct, and circle back until even simple moments become crowded. I understand the desire for it to stop, the pressure inside the mind.

    d’Verse Haibun Monday

For this week’s Haibun Monday prompt, we are encouraged to compose silence-themed haibun.

    Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

    Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  21. Again, March, or: Silence holds

    A haibun

    silence holdsrepeated alerts—end of March—

Late March. In the shelter, a mother reads aloud from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland—something about the March Hare. Above us, the air shudders; her voice resumes. I check my phone: the feed refreshes; the people of Tehran—still no signal.

    d’Verse Haibun Monday

The above haibun is my take on the prompt at d’Verse, which invites us to craft haibun on the theme of the March Hare.

  22. #Haibun: Bushido knows no gender

This piece is inspired by the driving rain of the past week, and an article I read about gender and Bushido. Their ragtag troop walks through the deep ravine, sharp rocks cutting through their feet, the rain drowning rivulets of blood down their legs and cloaks. They are starving. Only faith in their beloved leader keeps them walking. At once they see him: a powerful Samurai knight standing immobile as a statue on his horse, his sword…

J’ai vraiment adoré écrire ce livre… C’était sincèrement une longue et belle aventure…

  26. I'm excited to share my first book offering which I wrote in 2021. The first volume of the Almanac of Wonder and Wander chronicles in both informal haiku and haibuno form (picture, haiku, prose) my transition from Portland, OR to Taos County, NM. The book is ~116 pages long.
