I Remembered a conversation last year about eventually trying #Hades2 after sinking HELLA hours into #Hades 1 and completing the game on Heat 16 or 17.

After clearing H2 for the first time today i don't see myself spending much time w/ it.

It feels different, not better than H1: Omega attacks are welcome but the boons and weapons feel less cool/fun (with the exception of the greataxe. The greataxe is so fun it makes the other weapons feel disappointing). The mirror vs arcana is another example of "different" not better. The witchy vibe doesn't do anything for me. The casting circle makes sense, I just don't enjoy it as much.

I'm never pressed about the story of a Supergiant game, but I don't like the supporting cast of this game as much as H1. Nothing's clicking.

I recognize the allure of this and H1 is understanding the system well enough that you can clear the game with any weapon and arcana and form a workable build as you go. So far I don't enjoy enough of what the game offers to master it. In fighting game terms, I don't wanna play much of the roster, and this is a game that expects you to eventually do that.

Supergiant makes tight isometric action games with interlocking systems and dynamics and high levels of player expression. Mechanically, I love their games. The feel like the closest to that thrill and allure of a good soulslike, but in 2D.

Some people love the music or atmosphere in their games too. I'm not one of them. But I can understand why they've never made a sequel till now.

De granaatappel

De granaatappel is een van de bekendste mediterrane vruchten en komt, zoals zo veel mediterrane gewassen, eigenlijk uit het Midden-Oosten. Wilde granaatappels werden al in de Steentijd geplukt, maar de echte teelt dateert van pakweg 3000 v.Chr. en vond (voor zover bekend) voor het eerst plaats op de Iraanse hoogvlakte. Een half millennium later staan granaatappels vermeld op kleitabletten, en weer een millennium later was de vrucht bekend aan de opvarenden van het schip waarvan het wrak bij Uluburun is teruggevonden. De boeren op Cyprus en de Peloponnessos kenden de granaatappel in de dertiende eeuw v.Chr., en de Feniciërs brachten de vrucht in de IJzertijd naar het westen.

De Romeinen noemden de vrucht dan ook granatum Punicum, wat zoiets wil zeggen als “Fenicische vrucht vol pitjes”. Ook malum Punicum is gedocumenteerd, “Fenicische appel”. De Romeinse encyclopedist Plinius de Oudere meende dat het eten van de vrucht goed was voor de gezondheid: volgens hem was het sap goed voor het gehoor, genas het zweren en steekpuisten, verdreef het lintwormen, hielp het tegen diarree en tegen rode vlekken op de handen.noot Plinius de Oudere, Natuurlijke Historie 23.109. Het was bovendien een afrodisiacum.

Persefone en Hades

Het bekendste antieke verhaal over granaatappels is de mythe van Persefone, de dochter van de Griekse godin Demeter. Ze werd – zo heet het eufemistisch – geschaakt door Hades, de god van de onderwereld, maar haar moeder haalde haar na een lange speurtocht terug. Persefone had echter gegeten van een granaatappel en zes pitjes binnen gekregen; daarom zou ze zes maanden per jaar verblijven bij haar echtgenoot verkrachter, was haar moeder in rouw en was het winter. De andere zes maanden van het jaar was ze bij haar moeder, en die was dan blij en dan was het voorjaar.

De hamvraag is natuurlijk waarom het eten van de granaatappel zou staan voor een verplichte verblijfplaats. Het is net zo absurd als wanneer je, na het eten van zes happen curryworst, verplicht bent zes maanden te wonen onder de aanvliegroute van een luchthaven. Het antwoord “mythologie is wel vaker onlogisch” is dit keer iets te makkelijk, want we weten gelukkig iets meer.

Astarte en Afrodite

De granaatappel was vanouds het symbool van de Fenicische godin Astarte, de beschermvrouwe van vruchtbaarheid en het huwelijk. Dat was niet anders bij de Joden: de auteur van het Hooglied vergelijkt de lach een bruid met het rood van een granaatappel.noot Hooglied 4.3. De Grieken maakten kennis met Astarte op Cyprus en noemden haar Afrodite. Pelgrims lieten beeldjes achter van de godin met een granaatappel in de hand; ook waren er sieraden waarop granaatappels stonden afgebeeld.

De verklaring van Persefones verblijf in de Hades is dus dat ze had gegeten van een vrucht die was gewijd aan een huwelijksgodin. Het is om deze reden dat Plinius de vrucht opvat als afrodisiacum.

Esto salió regu, porque Cástor y Pólux, hermanos de Helena (y quienes más adelante se convertirían en la constelación de Géminis), la rescataron y Teseo se tuvo que aguantar. Cástor y Pólux, como venganza, secuestraron a la madre de Teseo (Etra) y a la hermana de Pirítoo (Fisadia) y las entregaron como esclavas a Helena.

Cuando tocó ir a por Perséfone, a #Teseo le entró el cague (con la lección aprendida de lo regu que le había salido su intento de casarse con Helena) y le dijo a #Pirítoo que igual intentar hacer lo mismo con una diosa no era buena idea. Pero Pirítoo, como no había aprendido nada aún, seguía viniéndose arriba, e incluso decía que Perséfone le pertenecía. Y Cerbero también, porque ya que nos flipamos, nos flipamos del todo.

Aquí llega la parte más graciosa: #Hades les ve y, como no es tonto, se imagina lo que hay. Les invita a un banquete y les hace sentarse en unos tronos llamados "tronos del Leteo" (el Olvido). Cuando les preguntan qué hacen allí, #Pirítoo le reconoce con un par que viene a llevarse a #Perséfone (y en varias fuentes hasta subraya que no viene a cortejarla, sino a llevársela tal cual).

Esto a Hades le sienta de maravilla, como os podéis imaginar.

Unas serpientes retienen a los reyes flipados, mientras que las #Erinias (personificación de los remordimientos de conciencia) les azotan.

Mientras, Heracles estaba haciendo sus trabajos (otro mito del que hablaré otro día), y uno de ellos era reducir a Cerbero, lo cual explicaría por qué Teseo y Pirítoo pudieron pasar perfectamente al Inframundo.

Heracles ve el percal y negocia con Hades para liberarles. Yo que sé, Hades, están en esa edad y se les ha ido la pinza. Hades sólo accede a liberar a Teseo, que sólo había venido a acompañar y ni siquiera estaba muy convencido.

About halfway through #Returnal, and I think I'll leave it here. Enjoyed it, but not enough to go further. It's bloody frustrating. Maybe I'm just not a roguelike/lite person. Also wasn't particularly taken with #DeadCells or #Hades.

Per cert, Mintha (Menta), era una nàiade i la única amb qui Hades va posar les banyes a Persèfone, anteriorment anomenada Kore (donzella), la seva esposa i reina dels morts, filla de Deméter (que ve de Dea Mater -deessa mare-) deessa de l'agricultura i, clar, dels cereals.

La Menta formava part dels ritus funeraris. La meva teoria és que aquesta associació sorgeix del fet que la menta sembla morir però rebrota dels rizomes que es mantenen vius sota terra quan les condicions exteriors no li són favorables. I de la seva capacitat de reproduir-se i escampar-se, però no per llavor, sinó precisament per aquests rizomes (que són tiges subterrànies), com si creixés del seu esquelet. I, encara més, com si d'un esquelet en poguessin créixer desenes de mentes noves.

Menta, representant el poder del reverdir, del reviure, és com una altra Persèfone, que mentre és reina de l'Hades, de l'inframón, res prospera, però quan ressorgeix, tot torna a la Vida.

És possible que la Menta sigui una reminiscència d'un ritus més antic que l'agricultura, que es va fondre amb la nova versió agrícola de Deméter i Core.
