  10. Floral shaming.

We buy cut flowers at the grocery store. A few weeks ago I noticed they didn't have the little packets of flower food(?) out. So I asked the nice lady behind the counter for some. She hesitated and then gave me three.

Mrs Miasma's theory is they stopped putting them out because I was slowly but deliberately bankrupting florists the world over.

    My greed knows no bounds.

  23. It's review season and one thing I have come to realise is that the higher up you go in #infosec, the more feedback for others you need to write, and the more your view on the work that others do can impact their performance reviews.

As a senior IC / architect kind of person, you have the capacity and the responsibility for helping ensure your more junior folks are working on the right things.

The right things is a mix of things that the org/business needs them to be working on, and its a mix of items you think can help them grow. Opportunities for them to make mistakes in a safe environment and learn/grow, are just as important as doing the right things for the business.

So as I write these reviews, I reflect on providing good feedback that highlights how I have seen them grow, including putting the right, positive spin on their failures so that they get recognised for the growth they are, not the "misses" that others might be inclined to view them as.

It can make a lot of impact in the review / calibration process as I have far too often seen a miss being used as a reason to deny a promotion, or knock someone down a rating when it should have been used as an example of them growing and improving and a reason to promote / keep/increase a rating.

So that is front and center in my head as I write these feedback this week. My role lets me go across a lot of areas, and touch a lot of people, and so I get a lot of requests for reviews, and I am happy about that.

More and more I derive my own value from how many problems I can help the business solve by influencing or improving those directly solving it. Even if proving that in my own reviews is really hard.. lol

  28. @coleens_ why not hack the system to their benefit? Already sounds like she's sharing the wealth, which is cool. Being a white male myself, I use it to my advantage as much as I can to help whomever I can, because I hate that our world works like this, but I'm not in a place to change it - so I hack the system. I'll use my privilege to help as many as I can. Simple hack, doesn't hurt anyone, and it works when you fly under the radar. #HackTheSystem #HackLife
