Sure times are bleak. But being friendly with the baristas (on a first name basis at this point) resulted in not just a personalized shout out on my drink but a free cheese danish that someone else drove off without getting. A bright spot during dark days.
And yes the other teas? Well I have a total of 10 meetings today, need to get prepped.

Curious, what "example name" do you use in documentation? I mean besides something boring like "John Smith" or "Jane Doe". My current fave is "Alison Chains".

You know that nerd thing where there's a joke amongst techies and one of them buys the domain for the joke? Imagine simply keeping that domain and actually using it for something. Behold!

A few minutes ago on the live feed for #artemis I watched the astronaut with the tablet on his lap unlock it with a password of 3939. Hope they change it before the next flight.

That time when we gather around the table…
…and fix the printer, reset the router, and explain 2FA.
Happy Friends & Family Tech Support Day to all who celebrate!
May your Wi-Fi be strong and your patience stronger.

Okay I know I could simply repair the keyboard with the intermittent keyboard problem impacting a couple of keys by taking apart my HP Dev One and cleaning/fixing/replacing things which will fix the problem, but am I doing that?
Of course not. Instead I'm of course thinking about just upgrading the laptop and I am trying to use this scenario as an excuse to try and justify a new fancy laptop purchase.

If you run Sendmail for a domain and are under regular attack by APT actors, then boy oh boy I have a fun blog post for you! What? Just me?
Ah well, you might find it interesting nonetheless as it is a monitoring problem I needed solving, and managed to actually meet my own needs.

A flaw led to more, then equipment upgrades and then things accelerated. What critical systems were impacted? Well, my own. Yup, massive techno-drama on the #homelab front.

It’s not a good rack rewiring day unless you scrape off some skin. But things are _slightly_ more secure.

I do appreciate the fact that many people are thrilled and excited to talk about the movie Hackers like they are. But when asked about it, they are typically shocked that I hated the film.
Yes it was in part that by comparison to the 1992 film Sneakers (and of course reality itself) it was wildly inaccurate, but as someone who remembers Eternal September* the film Hackers became its own version of that with a massive influx of newbies on security and hacker mailing lists and USENET channels saying "Teach me how to hack" who wanted instant results and would not respond well to pointers to papers and whatnot filled with technical details. "But I want to hack, not do homework!" was a reply I remember seeing that summed up a common feeling amongst newbs. Trying to explain that the film exaggerated and was fiction simply fell on deaf ears for many.
And that is why I hate the movie Hackers. Just remembering the film Sneakers that starred Robert Redford (RIP).

Fascinating report. Comment Crew was definitely already on my radar when I worked at MITRE, to the point that they were targeting NMRC as they had made the connection that my day job was MITRE. Not that I am saying that this confirms things disclosed to me in classified MITRE meetings, but this report from @kimzetter confirms a LOT for me. A fun read!

🔍 Oh, look! Another "rare" glimpse into hacker life, as if they're unicorns with day jobs. 🦄 Apparently, a simple blunder invites us into their world of chaos—but let's be honest, it's mainly an ad for security tools nobody understands. 🛡️💻

It's Friday Chai Day, and for fun I wrote a blog post which auto-posted this morning and I forgot to pass that on. Here it is, something totally not needed but still a nice nerd distraction in these trying times - bash themes.

As I prep for #DEFCON, packing bags full of too many gadgets and tools, I’m reminded of the internet of my youth. It was a place where anyone could freely debate, explore, and share on a level playing field. Discovery was everywhere. DEFCON feels like an extension of that long-lost internet. It’s one I still hope we can rebuild, piece by piece, through tools like those found in the #fediverse.
It’s easy to feel disheartened today. Companies like VISA and MasterCard are flexing financial influence over games and speech. At the same time, governments in the UK and several U.S. states are pushing invasive laws under the tired excuse of “protecting children.”
But DEFCON reminds me of something powerful. When you strip away politics, age, race, and status, and engage with people based on the merit of their ideas and their boundless desire to learn, amazing things can still happen.

It's the ultimate encryption implementation! Did I write it myself? Yes. Should one write their own crypto? Probably not. Am I going to use it? Well...
This was certainly a very fun exercise, and I learned a lot. A twenty year old project dusted off and modernized. Enjoy!

As a hacker, the fact that AI can generate code that is insecure and that people actually run is a reason not to use AI. But also, as a hacker, the fact that AI can generate code that is insecure makes me want to drive as deep into AI as possible.
AI is here and isn’t going away. I’m not dismissing it simply because it has a few elements or implications I don’t like. I’m delving in neck deep because as a character that hangs out on the edges of society, it is damn good to know the strengths and weaknesses that surround me at all times. I can take advantage of those strengths, and certainly can take advantage of those weaknesses as well.

“No, never. Why do you ask?”

Discovering a useful feature you didn't know about in a piece of software you have been using EVERY DAY for YEARS is one thing. Discovering a useful feature that you'd forgotten about, in a piece of software that you use every day, that YOU WROTE, is another thing entirely.
Ha ha. Oops.

A part of the argument against AI is that LLMs are somewhat less than accurate (colloquially, "shitty"), but in limited use cases they are fine. How do you judge an LLM? Well, I tried to answer that myself. Warning, the test is tailored more to myself and hacker friends than the world, but it should give you an idea of a direction to head on your own path.

Typical start to the day, this will last until late morning, then there’s the pre-lunch tea. Review of overnight logs, work and personal email, and work chores await.

Good lord I am glad my day is drawing to a close. Did I get everything done I wanted to do? No. But considering I started the week feeling sick, I am glad I got at least caught up with a few things checked off the list. Sorry world, you're not fully secure yet.
I did get the all-important liquid christening of the day completed. Love my #FridayChaiDay

How old am I? Gray enough (in both hat color and beard color) that when AT&T crashed on January 15, 1990 I (like many other hackers) initially wondered if I had done something to cause it.

After work tea. Especially good on a rainy overcast day with a dog curled up against me.
