Australia's largest outbreak of bird flu is over. What have we learned?: The two Victorian H7 strains of avian influenza have been successfully eradicated, but some farmers fear more frequent outbreaks and egg shortages could be on the horizon. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-31/avian-influenza-outbreak-victoria-bird-flu-in-australia/104812212?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #avianinfluenza #birdflu #H7N3

Diagnostic #Detection of #H7N3 Low Pathogenicity Avian #Influenza in a Commercial Game #Bird #Flock https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39126417/?utm_source=Feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=None&utm_content=1LGAx__djGAJ9poBzWGqPtjEbBDtz4ipSRRPUplmgHEyyF_Ihj&fc=None&ff=20240810182028&v=2.18.0.post9+e462414
Low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) H7N3 was diagnosed in a flock of commercially raised Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) breeder hens. The birds were submitted with an initial complaint of a drop in egg production and watery droppings.

Experts say #Australia’s current #birdflu #outbreak is ‘unprecedented’ https://cosmosmagazine.com/nature/birds/experts-say-australias-current-bird-flu-outbreak-is-unprecedented/
“This year ACDP has conducted 3,000 tests on 1,000 samples since the first detection of #H7N3 near Meredith in #Victoria in May, and subsequently #H7N9 Terang in Victoria, #H7N8 in #NSW and [#ACT],” says Eagles.

#Australia - High pathogenicity avian #influenza viruses (#poultry) (Inf. with) - Immediate notification, #WOAH: https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/5687
This is a confirmed case of #H7N9 HPAI in a mixed free-ranged and caged commercial #egg layer poultry #farm. The farm had a commercial link with another farm infected with #H7N3 HPAI, through management needs only, which was confirmed on 22 May 2024 (EVENT ID 5683). The H7N9 virus is genetically related to strains detected in wild birds in Australia.

#Australia - High pathogenicity avian #influenza #H7N3 viruses (#poultry) (Inf. with) - Immediate notification, WOAH: https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/5683
This is a confirmed case of H7N3 HPAI in a mixed caged/barn and free-ranged commercial egg layer poultry farm. Biosecurity controls have been implemented on the farm.

Avian #Influenza Virus and Avian #Paramyxoviruses in Wild #Waterfowl of the Western Coast of the #Caspian Sea (2017–2020), Viruses: https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/16/4/598
The following subtypes were determined and whole-genome nucleotide sequences of the isolated strains were obtained: #H1N1 (n = 2), #H3N8 (n = 8), #H4N6 (n = 2), #H7N3 (n = 2), #H8N4 (n = 1), #H10N5 (n = 1), and #H12N5 (n = 1). No high pathogenicity influenza virus H5 subtype was detected.

-- The #zoonotic #potential of this new virus should be considered. #H7N2, #H7N3, #H7N7 viruses have all been previously associated with #conjunctivitis and/or #respiratory symptoms in #humans while in 2003 in the Netherlands a fatal case occurred following an infection with H7N7.
