  1. A fatal #H5N5 avian #influenza spillover that was diagnosed very late. #AvianInfluenza needs to be considered as a cause in severe respiratory disease, in particular in individuals with a compromised immune status. #Birdflu

Influenza A virus genome sequencing of BAL specimen... confirmed HPAI H5N5 virus, Eurasian lineage clade 6 (EA6). Viral segment sequences had approximately 99% identity to contemporary HPAI A(H5N5) viruses without evidence of reassortment.

  7. CW: flu variants

    @isotopp @akareilly

"This year it's H5N5" only in the sense that someone's caught it from a bird. The worse risk is if/when a new one starts going human to human.

In that respect, I'd actually still be a bit more worried about H5N1. There seemed to be a lot of that in US cattle, and from either birds or cattle to humans and cats. And there was a case from 2004 where H5N1 possibly did go human to human:

"The index patient became ill three to four days after her last exposure to dying household chickens. Her mother came from a distant city to care for her in the hospital, had no recognized exposure to poultry, and died from pneumonia after providing 16 to 18 hours of unprotected nursing care."

Any flu is bad though! I've had my jab :-)

  8. A resident of Washington State has died from H5N5, a variant of bird flu never before seen in humans.

    First known case, first death.

Wear a mask, ideally a well fitted respirator like an N95.

RFK Jr has gutted the CDC.

There’s no plan to deal with another pandemic.

No one is coming to save you.

Masking is an act of resistance and radical community care.

  9. #Washington resident dies of complications from #BirdFlu strain never before reported in humans

The patient was an older adult with underlying #health conditions who had been hospitalized & undergoing treatment for infection with #H5N5 avian influenza.

It’s the first reported case of bird flu in a human in the #US in 9 months & only the 2nd reported human death from the #virus in the US, but the #CDC has said that the risk to the public remains low.

  12. Yikes! #H5N1 virus re-emerges in European mammals

#Foxes in #Norway and #Slovenia are among the latest victims of the virus.

    Jackie Linden, December 27, 2024

"Over the past week, notifications from national veterinary authorities have recorded that wild mammals have tested positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (#HPAI) virus in two geographically distant European states.

"Based on reporting to the World Organisation for Animal Health (#WOAH), Europe had been free of HPAI infections since June of 2024.

"Earlier this month, in Central Europe, a fox found dead in Slovenia tested positive for the H5N1 virus, according to the official notification.

"Around one week ago, the #H5N5 virus serotype was detected in a #lynx (#Wild Cat) found dead in northern Norway.

"In February of this year, two dead foxes tested positive for the same virus variant in the same Norwegian county. The disease situation was declared 'resolved' by the Norwegian animal health agency six months ago."

#Seabirds likely enabled multiple incursions of A(H5N5) virus from #Europe to #Canada. Some A(H5N5) viruses possessed the mammalian #adaptation #marker #PB2-E627K. A(H5N5) viruses demonstrated rapid 100% #mortality and some transmission in #ferrets. A(H5N5) viruses preferred avian virus receptors and are sensitive to NA #inhibitors.
