  1. Almost 1 year in the gym this month.

The strength side has gone well. Lately though, I'm maxing out on nearly everything. The machines are out of plates and the dumbbells are getting hard to even wrestle into position.

That pushed me to remember why I started. I got into this to fix my knees and protect my lower back, after years of carrying too much weight and sitting at a desk all day. Strength was the foundation, and I spent a year on it. Now I point the work back at the actual problem.

So I'm phasing in rehab and mobility, one piece at a time. Kicked it off today with some isometric holds after my Push session, which still snuck in a new PR (old habits).

A year in, and I'm getting back to the plot.

  2. Missed the whole week. Life got in the way and I didn't make the gym once.

Got frustrated enough that I went in at 1 AM. Then went again the next night. Two late sessions back to back, running on fumes.

Both landed PRs. Tricep extensions up from 10 to 12.5 KG, and the back extension machine jumped 10 KG to 130.

Didn't plan it, didn't feel ready. Showed up annoyed and tired, and the numbers moved anyway.

A wrecked week doesn't have to end wrecked.

  3. I'm running an experiment: starting my workouts with an isolation exercise before the compound, instead of the other way around. Everyone says compounds first, most energy, all that. But my body's old and a bit broken, and my warmup alone doesn't get me warm enough. So I flip it. One isolation to prime the joint, then the heavy stuff.

Today it worked. Opened with a reverse fly, fully fresh, and cracked that PR by 10 kg. Ended the day with five PRs and none of the usual joint grumbling.

Might as well say the goals out loud too. This year: a 100 kg bench press. Plenty of people get there fast; I'm not plenty of people, so it's the whole year for me.

Next year: one push up. One clean push up at my bodyweight. Sounds small, means everything.

  4. Shipped a new bit for my tracker today: tap any exercise and you get its whole history.

A progression chart, every time you've done it, all the PRs. I wanted to actually see the climb, not just today's number.

Good timing, because today earned it. Short, brutal push session, no power in the gym so no AC, humidity through the roof. Still walked out with 3 PRs, all on the chest and tricep machines. Exactly the grind-it-out day the history view is built to make feel worth it later.

The whole thing is a read-only log I run for myself, out in the open.

  5. Hit a pulldown PR today, but the real lesson cut the other way.

It's clear now that my grip is the ceiling on every pull. My forearms give out before my back does, every single time, so they're quietly capping all my progress. Walked away with a fresh tennis elbow to really drive it home.

I could throw on straps and keep moving bigger numbers. But I don't think I'm there yet. I'd rather fix the weak link than tape over it. So the next few weeks are forearm work, and probably some physical therapy for the elbow.

Funny how a PR and a setback can show up in the same session.

I log all of it, the wins and the parts that aren't, in public at Sweat Equity:

  6. A while back a fitness short stuck with me: if you're not warming up before a workout, maybe you're not doing anything hard enough to need one. Reframed the whole thing for me.

So now I warm up heavy. Five minutes on the elliptical, then a light cable stack, one arm at a time, 50 reps each through every angle: rotations, kickbacks, overhead, single-arm face pulls. Whole upper body lit up before I touch anything heavy. I'm an old guy now, gotta open things up first.

Today was a push day after a four-day gap. Ran on empty, still showed up. Snuck out a small fly PR too.

  7. Arms and legs today, and the legs part is humbling.

My knees are still a mess. Years at a desk plus carrying a lot of weight wrecked them, and for the longest time I just skipped legs entirely. Today's leg extensions were knee-assisted and they still let me hear about it. Realistically I'm six more months from these feeling right.

But the way out is doing more legs, not skipping them. Carefully, until they come back. So I keep showing up for the worst part of the session.

Still put up 270 KG on leg press, which isn't nothing. Slow road, but a road.

  8. Starting something new and doing it out loud.

I built Sweat Equity, a read-only workout log I run for myself. A year back in the gym and I was tired of apps that were bloated or wanted to own my data. So I made my own.

    What's inside:
    - Every session, PR, and current max
    - A journal for the wins, setbacks, and lessons
    - Charts and insights from my own data
    - Installs to your phone like an app

I'll keep logging here and sharing the journey, the good days and the rough ones. If you're into fitness, building in public, or just wanna watch a stranger fix his health one entry at a time, follow along. Always down to chat.
