2001–2008: #GWBush uses "Unitary Executive Theory" to consolidate security services and justify signing statements on laws passed by Congress.

2020: In Seila Law LLC v. CFPB the Supreme Court claims "the entire 'executive power' belongs to the President alone" and strikes down removal protections for the director of the CFPB.
2024: In Trump v. US the Supreme Court granted presidents broad, near-absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. Also, the leaker of the records Congress couldn't get and that Trump promised was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
2025–2026: Over and over, "Unitary Executive Theory" is used to justify a purge of employees and departments Trump deems to be enemies.

2026/05/18: Before showing up in court to answer "is Trump just suing himself with our $$$ at stake?" they settled out of court for a reported 10⁶ × $1776 — no Court, no Congress, no Transparency.

I think the rulers of Iran have Trump trapped and able to make only moves he doesn't want to make.
Compare this with Bin Laden who had Cheney-Bush making moves that Bin Laden wanted them to make.

Former ICE attorney Ryan Schwank had joined George W. Bush's newly formed DHS in 2001. Because he felt it was the right thing to do.
Then I realised I'd misjudged this gently spoken, well educated, son of a Guatemalan migrant.
Seeing now I've been so pickled in a para-fascist culture that I can't pick a fascist.

As a friend points out, this is bullshit: there were absolutely #protests against #deportations under #Clinton, #GWBush, and #Obama. #MAGA's selective memory is at it again. "Protests/Riots" is also telling. #Cult rules prohibit them acknowledging any distinction.
I do remember a number of #conservatives getting very worked up about the brutal treatment of #ElianGonzalez and his family. They were right to do so, or so I thought at the time.
Years later I figured out that what they objected to was not government agents waving guns in a little kid's face, but rather that it was happening under a #Democrat instead of a #Republican. Sanctioned #violence is only ever supposed to flow one way.

Robert #Reich writes in his substack about #TheWarOnDrugs: "America has never before bombed vessels and executed civilians on them out of mere suspicion." Don't know about that. I'm pretty sure the #WeaponsOfMassDestruction war in Iraq under #GWBush lead to some civilian deaths without proper investigation and absolutely out of mere suspicion. But I agree with him that the strong U.S. military presence in the #caribbean serves a purpose.
